On hiBt Friday evening the long looked
for concert of the Tuxedo Mandolin Club
was given in the chapel. It was under the
auspices of the Pnlladian Society, and to it
the credit for its successful management be
longs. However, the proceeds go to the
Athletic Association. It was for this reason
that the othor societies adjourned and helped
to make up the large crowd that attended.
The music furnished by the club was of the
highest order. Every selection was appre
ciated and received hearty applause. The
club, doubtless, ranks above any similar or
ganization in this part of the country, and
will always bo greeted by full houses when
it appears before university audiences. The
club was assisted ay the Ladies' Mandolin
Quartette, and by the Y. M. C. A. Glee
Club.
Prof. Barbour has returned from Chicago,
bringing the greater part of the Fair with
him. The Professor was in Chicago only
about a week, and was sick in bed for sev
eral days, yet he managed to purchase and
box almost the entire Chicago show, except
ing, of course, Tiffeny's diamonds and the
Turkish theatre. One of the Professor's
most valuable and interesting purchases was
a large collection of snakes and reptiles from
the Malay Peninsula, comprising about a
hundred species, among which are the fam
ous sugar cane snake and other varieties.
But the flower of the collection is a mon
strous boa constrictor twenty-one feet long
and as thick as the body of a good sized dog.
The whole collection was bought at a re
markably low figure, and did not cost the
University as much as the glass jars and al
cohol in which they were preserved was
worth. Prof. Barbour also succeeded in
getting a very fine collection of tropical
birds and a famouB baby crocodile, and four
baby lions in alcohol. Of course the Pro
fessor bought minerals of every kind and
.description, and fine ones they are, too. On
his way home he bought from -the University
of Iowa a magnificent marine collec
tion of corals, urchins, star fish, sea weed
and brilliantly colored shells. When the
specimens are all unpacked it will tax even
Prof. Barbour's ingenuity to know where to
put them,
