ence? Why was it that during the zither con
cert, the basso profundo undertone of heedless
listeners, at times destroyed the soul that the
performers were endeavoring to draw forth from
their instruments? Why is it, that in chapel, in
society halls, during the programs, in the halls
during recitations, there is so often so much
noise Is it western spirit? If so, heaven pro
tect us?
In Texas when it is desired to break a mus
tang, the horse in question is first lassoed, bound,
saddled and bridled, with a bit in his mouth on
which is a curb four or five inches long. When
released this horse has a master on his back and
is ridden, but not tamed.
Students are the counterparts of these wild
animals. Young, gushing and full of spirits, they
are never constrained to restrain themselves.
There are rules but a student takes more de
light in breaking one rule than in obeying twenty.
Rules will never change the character of the stu
dent body. The students' pride and honor must
he reached. To make them polite, they must be
, made to see the need of politeness. Eradicate the
false idea of smartness and feeling of reckless
liberty from the student body, and make of them
gentlemen. Gentlemen, real gentlemen, sent
forth on every commencement day, would be a
proud boast for our alma mater.
