10 THE HESPERIAN treasurer, Adam McMullcn. The following per sons were chosen as delegates to the state con vention: Fisher, Turrell, Slroman, Tallmadge. The winner of second place in the local contest will be chairman of this delegation. The tenth annual Chase and Wheeler oratorical contest will be held in the University Chapel next Saturday evening, January 21. The contest bids fair to be one of the best the Palladians ever held. The orators are burning the proverbial oil by night and scraping the ' blue vault of heaven " by day. The following named six Palladians are thus busily engaged preparing orations for the coming event: E. M. Pollard, C. C. Marlay, Flora Bullock, F. J. H. Larson, W. W. Wilson, C. R. Weldon. The State Teachers' association held their an nual convention in the University building Jan uary 3d to 5th inclusive. Prof. McBrien of Tecumseh, presided. Over six hundred teachers were in attendance. At each session the chapel was crowded to its utmost capacity and a great many were forced to stand in the halls. John M. Thurston of Omaha, addressed the association at the Lansing on the evening of the fourth and James Hughes of Toronto, Canada, on the fol lowing evening. It is unanimously conceded that their convention was one of best attended and most interesting of any in the history of the association. Do not fail to hear Mr. Henry Watterson next Wednesday evening. He will lecture in the Lan sing opera house on the subject, " Money and Morals." Mr. Watterson will appear under the auspices of the Palladian Literary Society of this University. The Palladians have gained quite a reputation in the last two years in endeavoring to place before the public the best speakers or musi cians the country affords. In so far as they have gone, they are to be commended in their selec tions and in getting Mr. Watterson here they have secured a man of national reputation and one that will insure a crowed house. The society has gone to a considerable expense in this matter and it is to be hoped that enough tickets will be sold to pay expenses and at least cover the deficit caused by the small attendance at the entertainment given by the quintette club not long ago.
