The school year is now drawing to a close. You
have received The Hesperian now almost a year
and the business manager has not received your
subscription dues. Do not put it off any longer but
settle up at once so that the paper may start out next
year on a new era of prosperity.
Some of the students seem to think it their duty
to pin up notices on the professors' doors or the
chancellor's bulletin board. The Hesperian thinks
that any student who resorts to such practices should
be regarded as a sneak. If you have anything to
say against the management of college matters cither
go to the authorities or make yourself known
through the columns of The Hesperian. We are
always glad to publish proper communications. If
you have any criticism to make do not use any
underhand means. Come out boldly and make your
grievances known. Anyone that has just cause is
not ashamed to make himself known. Honesty is
the best policy.
According to a certain newspaper in this city a
student, to render service to his country, must be
thoroughly versed in the science and art ot war, must
be ready at a moment's notice to kill off his country's
enemies scientifically, in accordance with the most
modern methods as set forth in the new tactics.
This kind of argument needs no answer. But the
implied argument that the general government
requires three years of military service from every
male student should not go by unanswered., We
should like to ask if Uncle Sam had anything what
ever to do with increasing the work in the military
department. We are acquainted with the facts and
know that the agitation and recommendation was
m.tde to the regents, not by U, S. authorities but by
U. of N. authorities. Again, we would like to ask,
why it is that in the Slate University of Minnesota,
under the same United States law, that only one
year's work is required in the military department.
In that institution there are about fourteen hundred
students and there is no preparatory department.
The lack of a military annex has certainly kept few
away. If a military department is to be maintained
at all, one year'is perhaps not enough, but three years
