The election of the new board of editors means
no backward step in the winning fight against college
fraternities. We believe them to be inimical to the
true interests of college life, detrimental to the wel
fare of those within the fraternities, as well as to those
without. They foster jealousy, sentimentality, and
effeminacy. They produce strife, not friendship,
bigotry, not liberalty. They mistake gaul and vivac
ity for brains and perseverance. Independence and
free self-development is as foreign to them as gener
osity and frankness. For these and other reasons,
we shall do all we can to encourage the open lit
erary societies and oppose their avowed enemies the
"frats."

The aim of the present board will be to bring
The Hesperian more in touch with the great body
of students. We wish to make the students feel that
this paper belongs to them and is for them. If you
have anything to say that will interest The Hesper
ian readers, you will be given free use of these col
umns to disseminate your ideas. Contributions,
especially for the literary column, will be gladly
received. It is our wish to improve the literary
department of this paper. For this reason the board
decided to discontinue the comment department.
Perhaps some will be inclined to criticise this change,
but the best part of the comment will be found else
where, so that little will be lost, and we hope much
gained by making the literary department more
attractive.
To-day, the university library is accessible to
more students than ever before. For some time past
it has been open two hours and a half each evening
of the week, Saturdays and Sundays excepted. When
it was announced that the library would be opened
evenings, every student thought that a long felt want
was to be satisfied. We were not disappointed. The
new plan was a great improvement over the old one.
Notwithstanding this, we believe that a slight change
in the library rules would make matters better. At
present no student is allowed to take a book from
the library without the consent of some professor.
If the library is to be open nights, and the students
come there to study, of course the books should not
