lit regard to tho Kansas-Nebraska
debate we tfnn only reiterate what has
been said before: The Kansas men
were trained. This was evident to the
casual observer. Our men worked
hard, but against great odds as was
shown during the debate.

paper reportH of tholr speeches to the
students at Harvard, that either the
gentlemen have been mlseoustrued, or
that they lack tho ordinary Instincts
of tho American citizen. If mioh
speeches, as are attributed to these
men, aro the product of much learning
and culture, then surely "a litUc learn

asking tho learned professors to please

No man can become too great to bo

The utter ctherialncss of political and

Harvard will surely nut benefit in the

Tho guns cost, about $5,000, and that

the students made up the balance.
This is quite in contrast, with the aver

Wo print elsewhere a paragraph,
culling attention to the action of a lo
cal paper in garbling a letter of Prof.
Hrdgman relating to the tatter's ad
dress in chapel last Friday. We can
not convolve of two words being
inserted byaecident in such convenient
places. Such conduct is unworthy of
any paper above the grade of the "yel
low" journals nnd should be most
heartily condemned. The paper wns
wrong from the first nnd should have
admitted it as gracefully ns possible.
We could then have credited it with
ho.iesty.
Tomorow is field day. This hius al
ways been a red letter day in athletic
circles and this year it promises to
surpass anything preceding. The con

for weeks, and Dr. Hastings is confi

consequence. Saturday's events will
show us what we can depend upon in

We clip the following from the Kan
sas University Weekly:
The fielding of the whole Nebraska
team was throughout the game posi
tively brilliant. In the thirteen long
innings only two errors are charged
against them. The work o. their out
field was the fastest ever seen here
considering the heavy condition of the
field. The fielders covered nil kinds of
ground and threw as hard aim as true
as if the balls had lieen shot out of
Commodore Dewey's rifle guns. Prob
ably the star play of the whole game
wns Bliss' running entt'h of Kills long
drive to left center in the tenth inning.
The hit looked good for three bases
and with Sample on first would have
won the game. The men in the infield
too presented a stone wnll front. Noth
ing got by Kindlcr at second who ac
cepted eleven chances and what didn't
come into his territory Wells and Cau
gill gobbled. Bliss led the isitors at
the bat with two home runs and a sin-gl".
President Elliott and Prof, Norton

MISSOURI-NKHRASKA OKHATK.
Tho first of tho Missouri-Nebraska
debates" wns held i iT t licchaJHl'of""t lie
State University of Missouri nt Colum
bia. May 4. The question which was
discussed was the annexation of Ha
waii, the Missouri boys ftixoring an
novation and tho Nebraska boys op
posing It.
Missouri based her arguments en
tirely upon the commercial and strat
egic value of the Islands and urged an
nexation solely from that point of
view. In that phase of the argument
they quoted freely from l.oriu Thurs
ton's pamphlet favoring annexation.
Nebraska contested each and every
point in regard to the strategic and
commercial necessity, and further ar
gued that, admitting the aluc of the
islands as such, it still is incumbent
upon the affirmative to prove that we
should now thrown aside the present
policy of independence for the islands,
under which they do have some Im
portance, and substitute for that an
nexation. Upon this argument as a founda
tion Nebraska established a series of
fundamental propositions:
(1) That annexation is not a nation
al necessity.
i) That a dangerous precedent will
oe established.
CI) That such a plan is impractica
ble and unconstitutional.
( I) That there is no provision in
our political system for the control
of such possessions.
O) That the inhabitants of Hawaii
arc undesirable.
(0) That the Hawaiians are unwil
ling to be annexed.
(7) That all commercial and strat
egic advantages are already secured by
treaty.
(S) That Hawaii is economically de
pendent on U. S.
(J) That n.ir material problems de
mand solution.
The University of Missouri can Ik?
justly accused of inuxcusiioie negli
gence, in regard to the selection of
judges for the debate. According .o
arrangement Chancellor Macl.can was
to have chosen one judge from Missou
ri, and Chancellor .Ic.sm.' of Missouri,
in turn, was to have chosen one judge
from Nebraska. Then botli together
were to hae chosen the third judge
outside of both states. Chancellor Mac
Lean did his duty promptly, but. Chan
cellor .Jesse did absolutely nothing,
nor did the dehatinir association of
Missouri notify us of the fact, till our
representatives arrived in Columbia.
It was then too late to obtain consti
tutional judges and two had to ,,e
chosen from Columbia, which is a
town of nlioiit four thousand inhabi
tants and run by the students.
Another point in which the Missouri
people took advantage of our repre
sentatives was in the statement and
interpretation of the question.
In their correspondence thex agreed
sp-cifically to the interpretation that
tin- U. S. should annex Hawnii. When
how oxer the six debaters were called
in-lore me judges for the statement
and Interpretation of the question, the
Missouri boys held to the original
statement, that it would be beneficial
to tho U. S. to annex Hawaii, and re
fused to change,
Nebraska, before Missouri bulires
and away from home, were either com
pelled to refuse to debate, or accept
the odds ami do their best to win un
der the adverse circumstances. They
chose the latter and from sturt to fin
ish the Nebraska boys put up a lino
of argument from their point of view
of the statement of the (iiicstion,
which the Missourians acknowledged
they could not answer. The faculty of
Missouri were hnnressed with the
