In the Gym.
Next semester the gymnasium
classes will begin light work with the
heavy apparatus.
Wednesday and Friday evenings are
reserved for public exhibitions of In
door baseball, which it is hoped many
will attend.
This is the last week for ba-"ball
men to taho tholr physical "xinutia
tlons. Professor Hastings hns aire un
examined eighteen men.
The number of candidates for the
baseball te;,m has now reached to the
numbor of forty-two. Among these
Is an exceptionally large number of
football men. Kindler, Cowghl,
Williams. Halstoad, Melford, Ponrse
and Schwartz are all trying for a place
on the team. Thore are also sixteen
candidates from the athletic classes.
Ah there are so many wibhing to
play indoor baseball, Profensor Hast
ings has arranged the following
schedule for practice: The Pershing
Rifles will practice one-half of Mon
day and Tuesday evening and all of
Thursday evenings. The baseball
mon will have one-half of Monday and
Tuesday and all of Saturday eoning.
The athletic class will practice from
C to 7 o'clock on Monday, Wednes
day and Friday.
Now that the basket ball season Is
over. Indoor baseball promise to be a
great attraction in the gymnasium for
tho next month. Practice was begun
the first of this week and all of the
boys who have thus far pluyed the
ganio are greatly in favor of It. Last
Tuesday evening the Pershing Illfles
did something toward organizing a
toam. Frank Rain waB appointed to
work up a team and theie Is good
prospect that his effort will meet with
success, as tho Rifles are all anxious
to get on the team.
The decisive gain In tho univoraity
basket ball championship series was
played last Monday evening in tho
gymnasium botween tho athkt'e clas
team and tho football men. This was
tho bccond of a series of threo games
and as the athletic class team won
the first one, tholr victory last night
by a t-core of 19 to 7 decided tho series.
Fouls were frequently mudo on bo h
sides and had tho football boys boon
more skillful in scoring free throwB
they might have made tho score more
nearly oven.
The athletic team threw five goals

The university basket ball team will
try to win back Its lost laurels Satur
day evening of this week, when it will
meet the Lincoln Y. M. C. A. team.
Two weeks ago the same teams met
and the Y. M. C. A. boys came off the
victors. Judging from the way the
university boys showed up In the see
ond half of tho game with the Omaha
Y. M. C. A. they stand a good show of
winning from tho Lincoln team. At
least no effort will be spared to win
and the team has put In special prac
tice in order to prepare for Saturday's
game. This will be very likely
the last game which the public will
have tho pleasure of witnessing and
opportunity should not be passed un
heeded by tho students, epeclally as
the proceeds of the game go to pur
chase record boards for contests In
the gym. The university team will
be composed of Hill, Story, R. 1).
Andreson, W. E. Andreson and
Benedict or Moore. The Lincoln team
will be practically the same as be
fore. FOUL TIPS.
Work begins in oarnest.many good
candidates and a good toam asiured
tor '98. The netting for the cage came
the early part of tho week and was
quickly put in place by the boya, who
wore all bo anxious to get down to
work that thoy could not wait until
tho carpenter got around to It to put It
up. Wo will be particularly lucky
this year in having a largo number
of pitchers from which to dovolop our
pitching department'. Whero we had
two or three candidates for pitching
honors last year wo will have eight or
ten this year. Fred Barnes, an old
student In tho Unl. and formerly of
tho Uni. ball team, but last year of tho
Milwaukee Western League team, has
been seemed to develop tho pitchers
Ho Is a lino man with lots of experi
story to tell and
ence and himself a good pitcher. The
ball boys seem jubilant over tluir suc
cess in getting such a good m .n when
the Idea of having a coach was a most
gien up by the boys. A meeting was
called for tho team by Captain Gor
don for Tuesday at 12:10. Ou r th rty
