    the piihpakatohy school.
Everybody knowH how long nnd how
hard tho UnlvorBlty hns strugglod to got
rid of tho llrnt two preparatory years.
Everybody known, too, how glad both
professors and Htudents woro whon thin
work was laid niilda and no longer mado a
part of 'tho stato'H grout educational head.
At tho Haino time, all felt Kind when last
spring tho Preparatory Sohool was organ
ized outside tho gntoH for It was clear
that If mich woik had to bo carried on In
Lincoln, It should bo dono In somo nuoh
way us this. It Ih well known that close
to all great unlvorsltlos there nro prlvato
preparatory schools, and nil are a help to
tho Institution they feed. Iowa univer
sity, for example, has ti vory largo and
prosperous feeder of this sort. Tho one
ut Minnesota university Is even more
prosperous, while at Chicago university,
thero are a number cf thorn and all doing
oxcellont work. At Cornell, tho board of
regents oven Incorporated such a school,
tho Onscadtlln school. Somo of tho pro
fessors of tliu Nebraska university made
their way through college by teaching In
Just such a preparatory school as has been
established horc.
It Is evldontly the purpose of tho school
to serve tho University In tho best pos
sible way by giving the best preparation
that can bo offered In tho s.ato. It car
rlos all tho preparatory suhjeotb not given
froo In tho University, and offers tho work
at a rate so low that It certainly requires
caroful business management and fore
sight to mako the school tho succoss that
It Is attaining. Already enough students
have registered to Insure a good school
for tho your, and yet It Is behoved that
not half of those luivo registered who ex
pect to attond. Tho school employs all
Its Instructors upon recommendation of
heads of departments of the University,
and so secures tho very best Instructors'
available, Instructors whoso work Is not
merely acceptablo but worthy of nccert
unco by any unlvcrslty.pr oxnmple, one
of tho instructors In Engllsli, Mrs. Frunk
Hn, has taught thirteen years In that sub
ject, and for nlno years was head of tho
department of English In the Kansas stato
normal. Tho lust two years sho has been
a spoclal Btudont in English lnnguago and
literature at Chicago university, and Is
Wghly recommended by that Institution
and also by tho department of English of
our own University. Students who want
to do any preparatory work or who havo
friends who aro coming, would do well
to investigate tho preparatory school In
tho Conservatory building. It may save
tlmo and certainly will savo money. At
any rato it can do no hurm to Investigate
and then glvo 'tho sohool tho support it
merits.

A MATHEMATICAL PROPOSITION.
I kissed herl Jove! But sho looked sweet!
I kissed her! Sho sprang to her feet,
"I thought you wero a gentleman," she
said;
"With scornful tone and glance. I lied.
Then when remorso hnd gained control,
And pcnltene qulto filled my soul,
I wrote her with Impassioned pen
And begged hor smile on mo again.
I quoted Byron, Burns, Shakespeare,
To soothe her hurt and pleaso her ear;
I begged forgiveness and said
I'd lost my heart, likewise my head.
What did she say to all of this?
Sho wrote, "For Just one llttlo kiss
It seems you mako as much ado
As If you'd taken twenty-two!"
I'm suro you'll say I did Just right:
I went round there that very night,
And continuing whero I'd begun,
I took my other twonty-one.
