The special lecture to young women In
tho hygiene class on "Hints on Nursing"
was given Wednesday by Mrs. Adclc W.
Baughman. The lecture was of special In
feros, and greatly enjoyed, It being Illus
trated by tho uso of dolt and bed. Mrs.
nnugbman Is a very pleuslng lecturer and
her talk was much enjoyed by the young
women of tho class. Sho touched upon
tho following points In her leeturo:Cnro
of the sick room, temperature, ventilation,
light: observing and reporting symptom.;
use of thermometer; taking of pulse and
respiration; applications, hot. cold medi
cated, water and lee bags, compresses,
mustard plasters, poultices, flax seed, etc.;
baths, hot, cold, medicated, use and ad
ministration; care of she bed, making bed
for the sick, changing sheets, etc.; lift
ing nnd moving helpless patients; food and
nourishment for the sick, preparation

TALK BY PROF. BARBOUR.
On last Tuesday morning during the
chnpel period, Professor Barbour gave n
short talk on Prof. E. D. Cope whose re
cent death has been a great loss to the
scientific world. Professor Cope was at
the head of the department of paleontol
ogy In the university of Pennsylvania, and
ranks as the greatest puleontolog'st In
America. The magnitude of his work wan
wonderful. He discovered nnd described
1,000 species of extinc; vertebrntes and also
1,000 species of recently living vertebrates.
By his great achievements, his name Is
entitled to be ranked with that of Huxley.
Ho was the editor of the' American Natur
alist as well ns a contributor :o all tho
leading scientific periodicals. Professor
Barbour regretted that he had not time
to say more but he hoped that he could
continue his lecture some evening which
would be set aside as a memorial evening
In honor of Professor Cope.

being arranged. Mr. Newell, who has been

Harry Johnson has been out of the uni

count of sickness. A relapse after hav
ing measles has been a serious set back.

ATHLETIC BOARD MEETING.
Last Saturday the Athletic board held
Its regular monthly meeting in the office
of the physical director. Important mat
ers pertaining to spring athletics. Includ
ing field day and the inter-colleglate field
contest, were considered.
The board asked the faculty to g ve a
half holiday for the local field day which
has been granted. While most eastern
colleges set apart a full day for Held day,
the members of the board were greatly
pleased at this much concession from .he
faculty. The men who show themselves
efficient athletes In the locU contest will
be permitted to represent the university In
the Inter-collegiate congest, which will be
held May 15, probably at M street park.
The colleges represented In the Inter-col-leg'.ite
contest will be Wesleyan. Doane
and the university of Nebraska. The com
mittee on minstrel show made a full de
tailed report of all recelp.s and bills. The
receipts from t'ekets were i'iZM), with ex
penses of 133.14, leaving a balance of $00.30
for the benefit of the .team. The report
was gratifying to tha members of the
board all of whom think that spring ath
lories will experience a revival, and they
think that the local contest will be a de
cided success.
