Tho Inofllcloncy of the presont constitu
tion of tho debating association Is cortnln
ly apparent to any one who has watched
Its workings. Tho recent d.fllcultlcs whlun
unfortunntoly aroso amung our dobaturs,
aro tho result of tho want of regulations
In the constitution an to tho order of
spenkers, the choice of iddes and tho con
ferring of tho Mandorson and Estabrook
prizes. DlsagrePinon.s among tho debat
ers, Is a mattur which every ono- regrets,
for It does away with harmony and nirn
cst co-oporatlon. Without theso conditions
tho debate Is hampered at tho outsat. Self
ish motives and Individual differences
should not stand paramount to tho Inter
est of tho unlvorslty. Tho outcome of tho
dobate will bo remombercd, not tho laur
els won by Individual spcukers, but from
tho success or dofoat of tho university.
Tho association should transfer tho priz
es from tho Kansas-Nebraska debate, to
the wlnnors of tho first and second place
tWIlnaWlobato, and thus avoid a rope-
tltlon of tho recent unpleasantness. In
uddltlon, special efforts should be mndo
to hnvo tho Interstate debato decided up
on tho merits of tho rospoctlvo sides nnd
no: upon the merits of the Individual
spoakors. This Is a con.est between unl
vorsltlos, and not between Individuals.
By heeding theso and other possible) sug
gestions, tho association will greatly prof
lt In hor efforts to carry on creditable con
tests with Kansas.
Many educators ,uko groat delight In
talking of tho achievements nnd splendid
characteristics of European universities.
Wo do not doubt that they are efficient
and are doing thorough work In hlghor
education. But would It no: bo wise to
commend the earnest efforts bolng put
forth by American educators, to raise tho
standurd of our own lns.ltutlons? Tho
growth of the universities of tho United
States within tho last qunrtor of a cen

certninly upproaohlng, If not oxcolllng In

It patronago and praise Instead of that

Tho mombors of the faculty have awak

national tariff legislation. Petitions are
crculatlng among the various educational
nstltutlons of the country, asking congress
to plnce toxt-books, periodicals and ovory

free list. No fair minded person, doubts
tho wisdom nnd expediency of such a re
quest. If tho potltlon Is tpproved with
such unanimity In other colleges as it Is
here, wo daro say there aro very few edu
cators who Indorso the provision of tnu
Dlngley tariff bill. Thero Is no excuse
from tho standpoint of rovenuo or other
wise to hamper, by lovylng .a high duty,
tho facility of getting educational equip
