A Bit of Musical History.
Manager Blakoley, of SoitBa's
Band, ia naturally full of enthusi
asm over tho repeated and con
tinuous triumphs of tho baud of
which ho was the creator. It was
Mr. Blakolov who introduced Mr.
Sousa, by quadrupling his salary
aud giving him carta blanche to
omploy tho finest musicians the
world ail'orded, to resign his con
nection with tho United States
Marino Band aud form tho per
manent organization of which ho
is now tho bond. This is now
tho third year of tho organization
of tho band, and it is constantly
and profitably employod in bril
liant engagements at Manhattan
Beach, at tho St. Louis Exposi
tion, otc, and it was tho first
band which Theodore Thomas se
lected to supplement his own or
chestra at tho World's Fair.
4,Tho engagement in this city,"
said Mr. Blakeloy, "is one of a
Berios of concerts of forty-two
weeks in duration, beginning on
tho 8th of March aud ending in
Now York at Christmas. It is
the longest uninterrupted season
of concerts over given by any
great musical organization.
"Tho band," continued Mr.
Blakeloy, "was formed for concert
purpubOb only, and is without the
preponderance of blnro and brass
pertaining to tho regimental or
parade baud. Its matchless
pianissimo effects are as refined as
those of a string orchestra."
Mr. Blakcly gives as an evi
dence of the popularity of Mr.
Sousa and his baud the fact that
ho received during tho last sis
months from tho John Church
Company, of Cincinnati, $12,
385.59 this being tho royalties
for tho six months ending Janu
ary 1st, upon three only of his
latest compositions, to-wit., the
"Manhattan Beach," the "Liberty
Bell," and tho "Directorate"
marches. This leaves out of the
account his other great marches,
including tho "Washington Post"
and "High School Cadets," which
are published by a Philadelphia
house, nnd are equally profitable
and popular compositions.
"Of course," said Mr. Blakcly,
"Mr. Sousa plays these and other
marches as encores at his con
certs, and he will introduce be
tween the regular numbers of tho
programs many catchy plantation
dances nnd airs dear to all sec
tions of tho country. This is ono
of tho secrets of Sousa's popular
ity. He makes people happy by
giving them '-vhat they like. Tho
connoisseurs get their sharo of
classical music, the people theirs,
and even tho gallery gods are
treated to the cachinnting tempos
which sot their feet and heads to
keeping time."
This great baud will bo at tho
Lansing theater for ono concert
only, Thursday afternoon, May
14th at 2 p.m. sharp.
Prices: 25c, 50c, 75c, SI; sents
on salo Saturday morning.
