The old, old story among our
univorsity students is that thoy
are ovor-burdoncd with work.
With most of thorn it is useless lo
argue. "Why, I havo only nine
toon hours," thoy say, "1 can got
all my studying dono so that I
can go to bed ovory night at
ten."
They have no time for anything
besides their class work. Thoy
have no time to rest thoir brains
by going to entertainments. Thoy
havo no time for general reading.
It is this last, no timo for gen
eral reading, that is most lament
able. No one can bo truly
educated who does not know
something moro about ovory sub
ject than what ho can learn from
tho text-books which ho studies.
Ho should havo tho broader and
moro gonoral viows of oach sub
ject and thoir rolativenoss to all
others. This ho cannot havo if
ho applies himsolf nioroly lo his
class-work. It would bo absurd
to expect so much from a limited
courso. 'But tho means are placed
at his disposal. Tho library is
full of papers, magazines, and
thoro upon all subjoots, oaoh de
partment has a library of spooial
roforonco which is opon to tho uso
of tho studonls.
Now, with all tho moans lo
largor Btudy so convoniont, and
with tho kuowlodgo of its neces
sity, is it not foolish for a student
not to tako advantago of his op
portunities? And this is tho same old warn
ing again: uDo not tako so much
class work, but spend more timo
in outsido culture."
