The Stnto Univorsity cortiiinly
novor was in u bettor position to
withdraw from tho Stato Ora
torical association, Tho charge
of cowardice and foore-hoadodnoss
cannot now bo hnrlod at us, for
wo havo takon first place for tho
last throo years and takon it with
oaso. Tho iiuancoa of tho associ
ation aro gotting into a doplorablo
condition and no stops havo boon
takon to romedy tho ovil. Tho
groat majority of tho studonts aro
in favor of tho movomont. AVhy
not pay our sharo of tho dobt and
withdraw ?
Tho sconos of the last conven
tion woro cortainly bonoath tho
dignity of collogo studonts to say
tho loast. What advantago is to
bo gainod from such meotings?
Had thoro boon somo groat prin
ciple at stako, thoro might havo
boon Borao oxcuso for tho actions
of tho various delegates in that
convention. Both sides woro
wrong. Both woro standing on
technicalities and fighting for all
they woro worth. Tho side with
tho president won, not the side
that was in tho right.
When an oratorical association
has degenerated into an annual
scramble for otlicos which preci
pitates a disgraceful fight, it is
time tho Stato Univorsity with
draws. To AN unprejudiced mind, it
would soom but right for Doano
to havo second placo which was
givon hor by tho judges. Al
though tho dolivery of Wesloyan's
representatives, in the minds of
tho nudionce, was bettor, more
polished, and finished, yet tho
judges havo so decided, and it is
not the placo of tho executive
committee to sot it aside. As to
taking advantago of a technicality,
by throwing out Gates' marks on
manuscript, this on tho face of it,
is political dirt. The University
of Nebraska is beneath taking
part in such a two-penny farce.
When Gates was admitted Fri
day afternoon, it was known that
her manuscript was marked and
it was understood by all present
that Gates was to enter the con
test with full right to first placo
if sho could get it. Why should
Wesloyan now attompt to throw
Gates out? It is quite evident.
But tho members of tho executive
committoo will do their duty.
There has beou enough politics
in this affair. Lot it stop with
this,
Tiie Nebraskan wishes to ontor
a protest against tho article on
titled, "Won First for a Wonder,"
which appeared in Saturday morn
ing's Journal, and created such, a
commotion in University circles.
It Booms strango that any stodont
of tho Univorsity, in order to
gratify a personal grudge, should
attompt to roiloot discredit upon
tho institution and dotraot from
tho victory of our orator, Ho
stands as our ropr sontativo and
is ontitled to tho support of tho
wholo student body,
Tho fourth artists' rooital will
bo givon by Mr, Siovoking Tues
day ovoning. Each succeeding
ono has onjoyod an incroasod at
londanco, and tho students should
see that tho fourth ono is patron
ized. Mr. Siovoking is to loavo
us soon for an eastern tour, and
those who havo not hoard him
play should not mips this oppor
tunity. Collogo Socloty.
On last Friday ovoning at tho

celebrated the anniversary of tho
founding of the Delta Gamma
fraternity. Tho society is twonty
throo year old and atoach succood

of proporly celobrating its birth
day. Tho house alroady boautiful as
tho homo of a brido should bo,
was docoratod with roses and
smilax. As each girl arrivod
sue was usnorou into a room
whero in tho place of stato stood
a bowl of roses, sont by Phi Delta

they havo hoard tho chorus of
delighted ejaculations thoso roses

Ab a sequel to tho ovonts of
last Friday in tho Oratorical As
sociation convention and contost,
WeBleyan is making a fight for
tho second placo that Doano now
holds. If tho manuscript marks
of Gales aro thrown out on the
ground that Gatos was not a mem
ber when those marks woro made,
thon tho ranks will bo changed so
much that Essort will havo a
highor placo than IConagy. The
matter will bo decided by tho ox
ooutivo committoo, consisting of
Loavitt of Doano, Boattio of Oot
nor, and Forbos of tho State Uni
versity. If Essort rocoivos
second, ho will bo chairman of tho
delegation to tho Intorstato Asso
ciation. As Wesleyan and Doano
havo broken thoir Alliance, this
complication might result in
Doano not gotting tho Intorstato
Prosidoney aftor all.
