Tint iNTitRitsT aroused in athletics by the interstate
foot bull contests between Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa,
and Missouri, has been very great. The rivalry be
tween the various colleges has stimulated each to re
newed energies and has increased the enthusiasm of
the students for their own particular institution. Why
should not this action be carried into all lines of ath
letics? An interstate Field-day would bring out the
very best material in the different schools. There
would then be some inducement for a man to train hard
and do his very best to win. As it now is but few of our
athletes care to go out to the fair grounds each year
and contest for a pair of shoes or a bottle of pickles
before a small audience.
Our tennis players have never had sufficient oppor
tunities for measuring their skill with outsiders. As a
result we have not produced may experts along this
line.
A base ball league would prove a great stimulus to
this much neglected sport. In the past we have played
anybody and everybody that would play with us. Very
little interest has been taken in the club by thestudent
body and as a consequence very little progress has
been made.
Last year a very encouraging start was made towards
an interstate "meet." If sufficient interest is mani
fested by the various colleges there is no reason why
very successful contests may not be held this year.
Let the University of Nebraska do all in her power to
bring about the desired conditions.

To the Chancellor.
To dice we drink a hearty health
In rosy wine of love,
May all the blessings heaven can give,
Light on thee from above.
The Prairies,
I love the wide, wide prairies,
Where the western breezes blow,
Wheie amidst the tremulous grasses
The fragile wild (lowers grow.
Where the gopher whistles shrilly,
Beside his fresh made mounds,
Where over the level distanee
The cry of the crane rcsouiuh.
Where the curlew and the plover
Build their nests on the tufted sod,
And the meadow lark upsoaring
Sings morning hymns to God.
Where, with a joy transcendent,
The melodious bobolink
With a chain of jeweled music
Sterns heaven and earth to link.
I love the level prairies,
Where no shadow ever shrouds
The candid, smiling landscape,
Save the moving shade of clouds.
Where the dew and the rain and the sunlight,
And the birds and the very air,
Seem one great poem proclaiming
That God is everywhere.
