■Alawyer for the accused
student says the teen has been
upset the past few days.
THE ASSOCIATE) PRESS
EL CAJON, Calif.—An 18
year-old student accused of
opening fire at his high school
last week told a judge through a
shattered jaw Monday that he
was innocent of attempted mur
der and assault charges.
Jason Hoffman, who was
shot in the face by a police offi
cer Thursday, bowed his head
and held a doth to his face dur
ing the brief court appearance.
He mumbled his plea without
looking at the judge
Public defender William
TYainor said his client “is very
emotionally upset about the
events of the last few days.”
The arraignment of another
teen accused in an earlier, fatal
school shooting was postponed.
Hoffman, a Granite Hills High
School senior, is charged with
attempted murder and five
counts of assault with a deadly
weapon. Police said he sought to
kill a vice principal, who
escaped harm.
Five people were wounded
in the attack.
Hoffinan could face as many
as 44 years to life in prison if
pleads ir
convicted. Hoffman will be held
without bail pending a May 10
preliminary hearing.
Earlier Monday, arraign
ment was postponed for 15
year-old Andy Williams, who is
accused of killing two class
mates and wounding 13 people
in a March 5 shooting spree at
Santana High School in nearby
Santee.
The slightly built boy cast his
eyes downward for most of the
brief court appearance. His par
ents, who are divorced, sat side
by side in the front row, and his
mother broke into tears upon
seeing Williams.
Williams did not enter a plea.
Under a California law
approved by voters last year,
Williams automatically was sent
to adult court for trial on two
counts of murder, which could
send him to prison for life. If
Williams were to be convicted as
a juvenile, he would face a mini
mum of 10 years in a youth facil
ity
“We believe the adult crimi
nal system has no constitutional
jurisdiction over this juvenile
matter,* said public defender
Randy Mize, who will challenge
the law.
Outside, relatives of one of
the victims, Bryan Zuckor,
expressed their opposition to
moving the trial to juvenile
inocent
court
“The killer in this double
murder, whether young or old, is
not the victim," said Brvan's
aunt Carol Lynn Briens.
Hoffman’s schoolmates,
meanwhile, returned to Granite
Hills High on Monday for the
first day of classes since the
shooting. Parents accompanied
many students, walking them
past patched-up bullet holes
and new glass that replaced win
dows shattered by gun blasts.
Superintendent Granger
Ward said 93 percent of die 2,800
students showed up.
Derek Haynes, a 17-year-old
junior, rode up on a skateboard
wearing a bright orange
Hawaiian shirt, headphones
and dark sunglasses. Under his
casual demeanor, there was
concern.
"There’s just a real uneasy
feeling. I don't feel safe at school
anymore,” he said.
Students began classes in
fifth period, the hour that was
disrupted by die shooting. More
than 150 counselors were on
hand.
For 16-year-old junior
Michelle Schreiber, it was any
thing but a normal school day.
"It kind of felt like there was
something missing,” she said. “It
frit like our spirit was gone. It frit
like it just went away.”
Conflict takes youngest victim yet
■ Continued violence resulted
inalO-month-old baby being
shot in the head.
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
HEBRON, West Bank — A
10-month-old Jewish girl
became the youngest victim of
six months of Palestinian
Israeli violence Monday when
Palestinian gunmen shot her
dead in die arms of her father in
the tense, divided West Bank
city of Hebron.
The shooting put Israeli
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on
the spot. Elected in February
with a pledge to restore security
to Israelis, Sharon was trying to
avert an explosion of violence
in advance of both Tuesday's
Arab League summit meeting
in Jordan and a potentially
explosive observance Friday by
Israel's minority Arab citizens.
The baby, Shalhevet Pass,
was shot in the head, and her
father, Yitzhak Pass, was
wounded in the leg by gunfire
from a hill in the Palestinian
controlled part of Hebron, just
across from a Jewish area.
The Israelis fired tank shells
at the neighborhood shortly
after the baby was killed. Seven
Palestinians were wounded.
Hebron is the only West
Bank city divided into Israeli
and Palestinian zones. About

After the shooting, the
Israeli military clamped a cur
few on the areas of Hebron
under Israeli control, confining
about 30,000 Palestinians to
their homes, and closed off
entrances to the city.
Justice Minister Uzi Landau
said Monday that it was a mis
take to give Palestinians control
of part of the city. He said that
Israel gave the Palestinians
rifles to control militants, but
instead, “they are firing at us
from there with the same rifles.*
Settlers demanded that the
Israeli military retake the hill
top from where the gunmen
fired.
Settler spokesman Noam
Amon said, “All this territory be
recaptured and the terrorists
there be wiped out. There is no
other solution.”
