students who made violent
threats, Nelson said, but with
more frequent violence, stu

“Kids are afraid of something
like this happening, and they are
being more cooperative about
letting faculty know,” Nelson
said.
At Lincoln East High School
on Wednesday - the same day as
the Burke incident - a student
received a five-day suspension
for writing a story about bomb
ing the school and injuring staff
and students, The Associated
Press reported.
Later, an investigation found
the girl’s story was not a safety
threat The student was still sus
pended.
Reece Peterson, UNL associ
ate professor of special educa
tion and communication disor
ders, worked with the Lincoln
Police Department and the
Lincoln Public Schools five years
ago in putting together a variety
of safety programs in area
schools.
Now Peterson puts on work
shops with the Lincoln police
and city schools to train teachers
and administrators about how
to deal with school violence.
“Schools develop their own
safety and security plan because
the circumstances are different
in each school,” Peterson said.
Nebraska is a local control
state, which leaves decision
making about each school up to
individual school districts,
according to the State
Mirtment of Education.
Peterson identified a num
of methods schools use to
vent violence.
Some of methods schools
can adopt include prevention
programs that teach student
conflict resolution skills and a
“Character Counts” program
that identifies six important
traits people should have.
Other ways Nebraska
schools deal with violence
include early intervention pro
grams that identify and help stu
dents who have difficulty deal
ing with problems through men
toring programs and academic
tutoring.
For students with serious
behavior problems, schools can
use alternative behavior pro
grams and individual behavior
management
These methods may help
children who are verbally or
physically aggressive, who defy
authority or children who are
depressed or isolated, Peterson
said.
For a school in Nebraska to
be accredited, it has to follow a
school safety plan.
Lincoln Public Schools has
also adopted an anti-bullying
program, which teaches chil
dren to be alert of bullies and
works with children who do the
bullying.
“I’m an advocate for schools
having some of these programs,
but they shouldn't have to follow
all of them,” Peterson said.
Peterson said the zero- toler
ance policy, a traditional way
schools have dealt with violence,
was sometimes taken to
extremes and wasn’t the best
answer.
He said a reformed sense of
discipline should be taken up by
Nebraska schools instead.
“Discipline needs to go for
ward and be more effective at
changing students,” he said. "It
doesn’t make sense to punish
children when they didn't intend
any harm.”

clipper with a knife on it doesn't
help prevent student violence.

University Police cited a
Selleck Hall Residence Assistant
for trespassing Saturday after he
partied in a resident’s room with
out permission.
A Selleck Hall resident
returned to his room around 2
p.m. to find his TV on, his bed
unmade and about eight or nine
beer bottles on the floor and desk,
said Assistant Police Chief Mylo
Bushing.
Bushing said the resident
found a Community Service
Officer, who contacted Residence
Assistant John Eurek, 22.
Eureck said he was staying in
the room and drank beer in the
room Friday.
The resident said Eurek didn't
have permission to stay in the
room.
Eurek was cited with trespass-,
fog.
Police still searching for man
accused of exposing himself
After a man exposed himself
to two young girls Sunday, police
still have no suspects.
Deputy Sheriff Bill Jarrett said
around 1 p.m., two 13-year-old
girls were walking along 141st and
Jamestown streets in Waverly,
when a man in a silver Honda
drove past die girls several times
while exposing himself
Jarrett said the girls said the
man exposed himself with a string
attached to his genitals.
Jarrett said after the man
drove past the girls the first time,
he Mocked diem by stopping and
then drove bade by, exposing him
self again.
The girls reported the man
was in his 40s or 50s.
The Honda car he was driving
was reported as being a newer,
four-door model
Lincoln youth arrested for

A burglar’s anonymous note
of guilt led to his arrest
Two Bose speakers were
stolen in January from St Paul’s
Lutheran Church in Malcolm,
Jarrett said.
But the burglar couldn't take
the guilt
’ Jarrett said on March 15, the
church received a package con
taining the two stolen Bose speak
ers and a letter of guilt
The letter stated the burglar
couldn't handle die guilt of steal
ing from a church and asked for
forgiveness from the members of
the church, Jarrett said.
Although the sender of the
package used a fake address,
police were able to track him
down, Jarrett said
Police then arrested a 17-year
old youth from Lincoln Monday
and cited him for burglary.
