Families fight for Reeves' life BY JLL CONNER Relatives of two women who were murdered in 1980 stood before Lancaster County District Court Judge Karen Flowers on Tuesday to testify the death penalty should not be sought in the re-sentencing of the Women's murderer. Randy Reeves, 45, was sen tenced to death in 1981 for the murders of Victoria Lamm and Janet Mesner. After 19 years on death row, and days before he was sched uled to die, Reeves' execution was stayed in 1999 when a high court said the Nebraska Supreme Court made a mistake when it didn’t follow certain sentencing procedures in 1991. Reeves was then scheduled for re-sentencing in May 2001. The current motions tiled are to disqualify the death penalty during the re-sentenc ing. ( Paula Hutchinson and Tun Ford, attorneys for Reeves, called on several relatives from the Mesner family to testify in the Lancaster County Court. Mildred Mesner, mother of Janet Mesner, said she was against the death penalty. Reeves' death would only cause more pain, she said. “It would be devastating to our family; we just cannot go through that," Mildred Mesner said. understood Greg Zessin, brother to Victoria Lamm, did n't agree with the Lamms and the Mesners. “If I followed only the fami ly (against the death penalty), that would result in arbitrari ness of the death penalty,” Lacey said. Lacey said if he did not seek the death penalty, there was a chance Reeves could be let out of prison on parole. Papers filed in Lacey's office in January cited the aggravat ing circumstances, such as the crime being heinous, atrocious or cruel, that could lead Lacey to seek the death penalty. “It would be devastating to our family; we just cannot go through that.” Mildred Mesner mother of victim Janet Mesner Lacey also said in January he had talked with the families who were for and against the death penalty before deciding to seek it in the re-sentencing. More testimony will be heard today in the Lancaster County Court. ;e * Nexxus * Paul Mitchell Rusk * Vital Nutrients MARCH 2-9 2001 WOMEN’S WEEK + ‘LOCAL TREASURES’ Wednesday, March 7th Chancellor's Commission on the Status of Women Award Presentation and reception, 3:00 p.m. Nebraska Union.* Career Services Presentation, "The Internet: An important tool for Women's Career Development" 7:00 p.m. Nebraska Union.* | Thursday, March 8th Janet Lu "The Chinese American Women' Experience", 2:00 p.m. Nebraska Union. Lacey said he had listened to the two women's family members who were against the death penalty. Kenneth Mesner said he remembered Lacey telling the families he was in between a rock and a hard place when deciding whether or not to seek the death penalty. Although Victoria’s widow, Gus Lamm, and daughter, Audrey Lamm, were against the death penalty, some members of her family were not. Gus and Audrey Lamm were also at die hearing. Kenneth Mesner said he Perlman prepared to become chancellor HUMAN from page 1 the Office of Admissions, attended both Perlman's and Hogan’s receptions. Schleiger said she thought both candidates were qualified for the position. But most people at Hogaq’s reception didn’t know him, so they asked him mainly back ground information, she said. A lot of people know Perlman, so he was asked more difficult questions at his recep tion, she said. Regardless of the differing question styles, Schleiger said she thought both performed well. “I have to think most peo ple who meet both would be comfortable with both,” she said. Phil Wilson, a freshman finance major, attended Perlman’s reception so he could wish the interim chan cellor luck on landing the per manent job. Wilson, a member of the Chancellor’s Leadership Class, said he was pleased to work with Perlman in the class. Wilson and his classmates have also spent time with Perlman outside of class, and Wilson said Perlman was always approachable. "He acts like a true leader,” Wilson said. ”He gives students respect, and the students respect him.” I Earn credit this with Summer Reading Courses Meet instructors and select your courses at the March 21 Program Meeting 4:00-5:30 p.m,, City Campus Union OR meet instructors at meeting listed with courses below.
