Reason for man's death unknown BY JLL CONNER An incoherent and unre sponsive man walking around Uncoln residential streets died in police custody Saturday. Lincoln Police Chief Tom Casady said Dennis Shaw, 43, was first seen around 6 p.m. near the 1900 block of B Street where he collided with a garage. A man followed him as he walked north on 21st Street and a woman called police, Casady said. Lincoln Police Sgt. David Beggs said a resident reported to the police that Shaw was acting as though he were intoxicated. “He was suffering from some kind of medical problem that caused his behavior, but we don’t know what it was,” Casady said. Lincoln Police Officer Lisa Rose found Shaw around the 2400 block of B Street walking east, Casady said.. Rose then called Officer Andrea Marsh for backup, Casady said. Both tried to detain and restrain Shaw, but he was unco operative and showed violent behavior, Beggs said. Casady said because Shaw stopped breathing, officers called for an ambulance. "As soon as they got him sit ting up, they realized all along something was wrong with him,” he said. Emergency workers arrived, began cardiopulmonary resus citation and then transported Shaw to Bryan LGH West where he was pronounced dead, Casady said. ”1 don't have any reason to believe he was under die influ ence of drugs or alcohol,” Casady said. After Shaw’s autopsy is per formed today, police may or may not know the cause of death, Casady said. "Hopefully we’ll be able to shed some light on it with the post-mortem examination,” he said.
