After being an ASUN senator the past year, Fuerst said he thought ASUN should be proac tive, not reactive, and be focused less on state issues - fetal tissue research and domes tic partner benefits, for example - and more on student needs. "I think ASUN sometimes has its focus in the wrong spots,” he said. “ASUN needs to ask the students, ‘What do you want us to do for you?’” He said though it may take a while, he hoped students would eventually view approaching ASUN with ideas and opinions in a positive light. Fuerst said he was dedicated to bringing his platform promis es - a tuition grandfather clause, an emphasis on international programs and a university book network-to life. He said another of his priori ties, if elected, would be to cre ate a governmental position to head the book network, a stu dent-run book-selling venue he said he wanted to implement before next semester. “I think the book network is definitely going to happen,” he said. "Why doesn’t ASUN act as a facilitating entity for book sell ing and buying? It needs to be done.” Lopez said she and Fuerst shared the same vision for ASUN and the university, and they were ready to lead. "I think the things we’ve cho sen are a challenge,” Lopez said. A challenge that she said she and Fuerst, who Lopez said is a “man of integrity,” were ready to meet. “When Nate asked me to run with him, I never had any ques tions about his integrity,” she said. “He’s the most motivated person I’ve ever met. “He's got a lot of ambition and the experience to talk and do the right things.” Fuerst said he would like to bridge the gap between City and East campuses by encouraging students to attend events on both campuses and reap the benefits of diversity. Fuerst said that by interact ing, students from both cam puses can learn to appreciate differences. Fuerst said he got some of his first college leadership expe rience on East Campus, as pres ident of Burr Hall his freshman year. He also has been involved with New Student Enrollment, and the planning of Big Red Welcome. He said his leadership expe riences have made him want to help new students get the most out of college, which he said he would hope to do as president. “(Students) are here because they want to be here,” he said. “It’s a point in life where you make it your own life. I’ll do any thing I can to serve students in that capacity.” Scorel's Fitch keeps his mind, door open FITCH from page 1 Fitch said if he was elected, he would also work to bring ASUN members together. “I’m an open person, and I’m comfortable talking with anyone regardless of who they are or what party they’re from,” he said. He also plans on imple menting a presidential call-in show on the campus radio sta tion, 90.3 KRNU. The show will allow the ASUN president to inform students about what’s up in the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska. Students also will be able tq voice their opinions on air. • . Fitch’s previous experiences include working in New Student Enrollment, being a RHA sena tor and serving as a Teacher’s College Advisory Board mem ber. Fitch said he was confident in his decision to run with Fuerst. He said this confidence stemmed from the fact that he knew each of the presidential candidates before the election campaigns began. He chose Fuerst because he said he could trust him with anything. “Sometimes what you see isn't always exactly what you get,” he said. "I chose Nathan because I know I can trust him.” Please remember to recycle your Daily Nebraskan. , You’ll be glad you did.
