Luttich says he's'The One' / lUTTICH from pagel Luttich also appeared in the national press when he was on the pages of Rolling Stone magazine in October. He appeared in an article titled “Coming Out on Fraternity Row," which detailed his and other gay UNL fraternity members' experiences. Not wanting to stigmatize his fraternity, Luttich said in Rolling Stone, he resigned as Chi Phi Fraternity president tyut still remains an active member. He said he didn’t want his homosexuality to be a factor in the campaign. “I don't want to make it an issue," he said, “but I’m not going to hide from it." There are other issues to focus on, he said, and with a record number of individuals this year seeking the presiden cy, Luttich said he had distin guished himself as the candi date having a clear grasp of the issues during the debates. “I encourage people to come to the debates and make up their own mind,” he said. “I enjoy the debate process. I have thoroughly researched all the elements of my plat form, and I believe it shows." The next debate, which is sponsored by the Daily Nebraskan, will be held Thursday at noon in the Nebraska Union. Luttich's running mate, first vice presidential candi date Melanie Mitzel, said 7 enjoy the debate process. I have thoroughly researched all the elements of my platform, and I believe it shows.” Jaron Luttich presidential candidate, The One Party Luttich did an incredible amount of research into the online teacher evaluations used by other universities. “He makes an extra effort to find out everything he can about a subject,” Mitzel said. “Jaron understands all the issues. I am really encouraging people to go to Thursday’s debate and witness this for themselves.” Ashley Truong, a UNL sen ior and friend of Luttich, said Luttich was an exceptional leader. “Jaron is very goal orient ed, and he has the ability to make everyone feel comfort able,” Truong said. Luttich said he knows he can make a difference in ASUN. “Thomas Jefferson said it only takes one man to be a majority,” Luttich said. “One man can stand up and rally others. He can change the direction of an organization.” Candidate canned after false names NUFORCE from page 1 said. The commission discovered the forged signatures Thursday during a routine signature check, Conley said. All candidates’ signatures are verified randomly by check ing about every fifth person’s social security number. If the number is invalid, commission members go on to check each subsequent number to ensure accuracy. Around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, a commissioner dis covered 35 fraudulent signa tures in a row, Conley said. At approximately 11:00 a.m., Conley was notified of the situa tion. He immediately called Clements and asked her to meet him in the ASUN office, he said. In the office, Clements was informed of the situation. Two candidates from the NUForce party, Electoral Commission member Amy Ellis and ASUN Director of Development Marlene Beyke were present at the informal meeting. Clements said that meeting was the first time she had been told about the forged signa tures. Clements charged that Conley yelled at her during the informal meeting. “I considered dropping out because I was badgered and cornered,” she said. “John Conley did a very good job of making me feel like I am a per son with no integrity. But he's wrong.” Conley said he did not raise his voice at Clements. Thursday. “I will not deny that I spoke firmly and directly with the can didates,” he said. “But at no time did I raise my voice to what I consider yelling.” The commission had a meeting to determine a ruling on the forged signatures at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday. The four members present voted unani mously to close part of the meeting to the public. The meeting was closed to the public because the commis sion didn’t want to injure Pacquette’s reputation if the allegations were false, Conley said. “At the time, they were alle gations,” he said, “and the last thing the Electoral Commission wants to do is to hurt the reputa tion of a student" Commission members Conley, Ellis, English Associate Professor Steve Buhler and agri cultural economics Professor David Aiken voted unanimously to disqualify Pacquette from the race. The commission handed the forgery case to the Office of Judicial Affairs on Thursday, Conley said. Clements said the events of the last week will be a hard pill for her party to swallow. “This is really difficult to deal with,” she said. “We ran as a team, but that was destroyed by the absolute unethicality of someone who isn’t a part of NUForce.” Meeting first step to revamping 911 BY JILL CONNER A meeting this morning between city officials and Alltel Communications officials will be the first step toward revamping the way the 911 emergency center receives its calls. The 911 center did not take in any emergency phone calls for about six hours Thursday night because moisture damaged incoming phone lines. Mayor Don Wesely said he and other city officials never imagined a breakdown in the 911 system could occur. “We had been assured that it wouldn’t be possible,” Wesely said, "so we’re very, very unhappy that it happened.” Although 25 lines run into die Hall of Justice at555 S. 10* St,the cables eventually all come togeth er to form one incoming line or trunk. Because die lines run into the building in a trunk, no other phone lines provide service if this trunk doesn't work. Wesely sighted this as one rea son for the outage. “(Alltel) told us everything was fine, and it wasn't,” Wesely said. “We want to know what we can do about it, and now we’re looking at Alltel to give us some of their ideas on that” Dwain Hebda, a spokesman for Alltel, said the meeting today will create a group that will take a closer look at the problem. “Right now, it is a lot of research and background work,” Hebda said. Rewiring or rerouting the lines is a difficult task because it involves a lot of different depart ments, he said. Hebda said the group will look at costs and measures that could make the transition more diffi cult Tearing up streets was one concern, he said. Hebda said representatives from different departments that will be affected by the rerouting will be at the meeting to discuss limitations. “We’ll be looking at different proposals made through the years,” Hebda said. Wesely said a second set of phone lines could be one answer, or a plan that would reroute lines immediately in the occurrence of an emergency could be another. At a press conference last Thursday, Wesely signed an exec utive order that called for a new 911 backup center to be built at the Highlands Fire Station, 5435 N.W First St He said this new center offers another answer to the problem. “We're doing our part. Now we’re asking Alltel to do their part,” Wesely said But the center, a $280,000 project, won’t be running until next fall, Wesely said. Until it is built and Alltel fixes the problem permanently, Wesely said there is no assurance a break down won't occur again.
