NU takes on small schools after spring practice woes BYDIRKCHATELAIN When the Nebraska track teams compete in Saturday's Prairie Wolves Invitational, it will be difficult not to look ahead to next weekend. The Big 12 Indoors come to Lincoln Feb. 23-24. Instead of facing off with the best the Big 12 has to offer, tomorrow’s meet is against mostly Division II and III schools. Nebraska Coach Gary Pepin said the competition isn’t a con cern. “We’re trying to do a lot of things in this meet,” Pepin said. “It's an opportunity for some to show the coaches what they can do and still make the team “It’s a chance to get in anoth er meet for those whose season started late, and some people we’re still trying to determine what events they're going to be • n in. Nebraska held a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint. "We wanted to get some early baskets inside, and that opened up a lot for us on the outside and enabled us to drive the lane,” said Rodney Fields, who said to expect much of the same approach against Colorado. While the renewed effort in the post opened up lanes for Fields and the other guards to drive, it also opened up passing lanes, leading to a wealth of unselfish play and 25 assists. “I’ve been here for two years, and I can’t remember the last time we had 25 assists,” Fields said. Husker Notes: Another native Nebraskan has agreed to walk on for the Huskers next season. Tbny DN FilePhoto Nebraska hasn't won two straight games since late December. Wilbrand, a 6-foot-10, 245 pound center from Alliance, has accepted a spot on next year's team without a scholarship.
