    Senators tackle fetal issue
FETAL from page 1 .
Bob Blank, director of Metro
, Right to Life, returned fire by
slamming what he said was
Miller’s shady anti-abortion
stand.
Miller said he supported the
research but didn’t support
abortion.
Blank said every anti-abor
tion rights group in the country
opposed the research, and "retd
pro-lifers” oppose the research,
too.
“The practice is at odds with
the purposes and beliefs of every
group in the nation,” he said.
Mills said groups like hers
protest the practice because it
“degenerates life” and increased
the number of abortions.
UNL Interim Chancellor
Harvey Perlman said claims like
Mills' simply aren’t true.
He said women would have
abortions regardless of whether
researchers use the aborted tis
MHHM H
sue.
Moreover, he said, what
would be truly unethical would
be to abandon the valuable
material.
“Once an abortion is per
formed, it is a moral sin to dis
card tissue that could otherwise
offer hope to millions who suffer
from debilitating diseases,” he
said.
While Pedersen said his bill
would expedite the process of
finding an alternative to aborted
fetal tissue, Miller said it would
cripple it.
Nebraska is the only state in
the country that is actively look
ing for alternative sources, he
said.
By passing the bill, he said
the senators would quash any
attempt to find different sources.
“Passing a research ban in
Nebraska does not stop the
research, it simply forces the
researchers to move to Harvard
or Iowa,” he said.
