Jones'career-high 15 not near enough WOMEN from page 12 competition - its sixth top 25 opponent in seven games. Once again, the Huskers came down with the case of the bobbles - committing 28 turnovers that turned into 26 points for OU. Once again, they were unable to find any sort of formula to attack the basket or any go-to player to take over the game. "It reminds me of an orches tra without a director," NU Coach Paul Sanderford said. “We threw the ball all over the ballpark. You can't expect to do that at this level and be compet itive." Stephanie Jones tried her best to step up, pouring in a career-high 15 points. Any satis faction from that feat was mauled by the continuing pain of NU’s losing. The Sooners may be a top-10 team, they may have matched their Big 12 leading season aver age of 84 points and had four players score 14 points or more, led by Stacy Dales’ 20. They may have swiped 17 steals - nine coming from NCAA season leader LaNeishea Caulfield - from NU’s young, fumble-prone guards. But Jones doesn’t buy and cant figure out why the Huskers have stooped to die league cel lar. “I think by far we’re the most talented team in the Big 12,” Jones said. "And it’s so frustrat ing because you're playing with great athletes that are so good, and we’re 10-13. We’re second to last in the Big 12. "You take a bunch of win ners, and we're losing. It’s just frustrating. (OU’s) good, but I think as a whole, we’re better. We have more talent. They didn’t have a girl who could guard (Casey Leonhardt) ” Leonhardt, a 6-foot-5 senior, finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. But the Sooners could stop NU’s guards, and they could run. Three of OU's first four field goals on the 18-4 first-half run that blew the game open came on layups. OU led 40-29 at half time. Still, Sanderford said the same old quote about the rest of his team’s season. NU plays No. 23 Colorado in Lincoln on Saturday. “I still think we’re going to beat somebody we’re not sup posed to,” Sanderford said. And, with that, die same old story ended. Again. Huskers narrowly escape OSU in overtime iEtdfH from page 12 "He had great confidence," Nebraska Coach Barry Collier said of Belcher. "Credit him for pursuing die hot hand." NU seemed poised to ride Belcher’s hot shooting and strong second-half start into an easy win, taking a commanding 49-37 lead with 14:30 left in the game. The Cowboys were in con stant foul trouble as well with NU senior Kimani Ffriend caus ing trouble inside. Ffriend scored 17 points off the bench after being blanked against Colorado on Saturday. The Cowboys rode the play making skills of junior guard Maurice Baker to forge a come back. He completed an 18-4 OSU rally, giving his team a 55 53 lead on a three-point goal with 8:25 remaining. NU responded to the chal lenge, going on a 14-5 run and taking a 67-60 lead, but it could n’t hold it. An Andre Williams dunk with 19 seconds left tied the game at 70. Neither team could pull ahead in the closing seconds of regulation. “We had to give the people their money's worth,” Belcher joked afterwards. Nebraska never trailed in the extra period but couldn’t pull "Something hit me, and my shot just felt good. Every time I touched it, / just wanted to shoot it, and / did, and we got on a roll." Cookie Belcher NU senior guard away either, and NU led only 77 75 after Cochran made a free throw with 12.3 seconds remaining. Another Cochran free throw after a John Robinson steal pro vided NU a three-point cushion with 2.6 seconds left Oklahoma State couldn't get a last-second shot off, and NU escaped with a much needed win. Collier said the win left him a little drained, but excited. “This was a very hard-fought game,” he said. "I am very impressed with Oklahoma State. We were very fortunate our defense was as strong as it was.” Oklahoma State loss to Huskers considered therapy BY JOSHUA CAMENZM) Wednesday night, Oklahoma State’s Basketball team got another free therapy session—in the form of a bas ketball game with Nebraska. OSU forward Fredrik Jonzen and his nine teammates played their second game in three days after beating Missouri 69-66 at home Monday night The therapy sessions are needed as tt’s been just 11 days since 10 members of OSU’s bas ketball family were killed in a fatal plane crash Jan. 27 in Colorado. “It's great to play basketball” Jonzen said. “It’s a very good sabbatical” Oklahoma State lost in over time, 78-75, to the Huskers, but just being on the court beat the alternative of the past week, players said. OSU’s time has been filled with funerals and memorial services, but Jonzen said the only true healing will come with time - and roundball. “It is going to take a while for all of us to deal with,” said Jonzen, who scored 11 points for OSU before fouling out Oklahoma State started it’s therapy off on the right foot with the Mizzou win. But then came the flight to Lincoln. Victor Williams, who had “Big 10” inscribed on his ankle tape, said an initial fear came over the team at the start of the trip, but the 55-minute flight beat the eight-hour driving alternative. None of the Cowboys said they were relieved to have the trip out of the way and OSU Coach Eddie Sutton made one reminder after die game. “We're not home yet,” he said. After the setback, Oklahoma State, won’t be satisfied when they do arrive home, either. “We should have won this game,” Jonzen said afterward. OSU held a lead of 30-24 with 4:37 remaining in the first half, but NU rallied to take a 40 33 lead at halftime. “1 was really concerned because our guys just looked emotionally beat in there," Sutton said. “I was even more alarmed after the first three to four minutes when we fell behind double figures." Battling back to force over time, the Cowboys and their point guard Maurice Baker went cold in the extra period. The team hit only one of six shots. Baker led OSU with 22 points, but managed only one overtime point. Williams, who added 14 points, said he and his team mates were tired, but did not use it as an excuse. “Those 10 guys up there were warriors and they would want us to come out and play each game to the best of our ability,” he said. “They wouldn't want us to mourn over them.” With a trip to Kansas up next for OSU on Saturday, the road Royal Grove 340 W Cornhusker COLLEGE NIGHT Every Thursday Night DIME SLIMES (1 O* DRAWS) 9-1 O pm Dance to the music of MYLOW 9pm-12:45am No door charge ONE drink minimum 19+ admitted Friday Night: The music of ON THE FRITZ Saturday Night: The music of TRIGGER Fob- 14th, Valentine’s Day Dance Contest Cash Prizes ryour HUMS doesn't get any easier for the Cowboys.
