    'Requiem'packs punch in
final virtuoso sequences
REQUIEM from pages
performance that makes it the
very best this year, places her
character directly in the line of
fire. Her refrigerator has begun
to taunt her in hallucinatory
panics. The pills mix and
increase. Sara’s tightly managed
TV dream begins to unravel. So
do the lives of Harry, Marion
and Tyrone.
They take more risks, more
pills, more pot, more heroin.
They travel the first part of
degradation just slowly enough
not to notice it. But soon, the
final plummet begins for all four
characters.
The principal catalysts - an
emaciated arm, an offer
Marion’s junkie habit can’t
refuse, two separate visits to the
hospital, Sara’s confrontation
with the television company -
play out in a can’t watch/can’t
look away human disaster. This
pot has been boiling from the
opening credits, a type of disso
lution, and when the funeral
begins, it doesn’t end until it’s
hammered home while the
Kronos Quartet rattles its strings
in the background music.
Aronofksy’s final movement
is punishing- and the most bril
liant 15 minutes of film this year,
heightened by his relative
restraint over the first half of the
film. “Requiem for a Dream” is
beautifully shot in Coney Island,
where the broken down coasters
and bleached sky stand as man
gled monuments to the sad uni
verse these characters inhabit.
While more than 100 digital
effects were used for the film
(tiny vacuums, for example,
were employed to achieve close
up drug use) he understands
how to let a scene live and
breathe on its own, while still
incorporating fine performanc
es.
The movie was released
unrated after the MPAA slapped
it with an NC-17 rating, which
can only be, I d guess, for the
severity of those final
sequences. This movie is not for
the squeamish.
And yet, unlike films that are
gratuitous, “Requiem for a
Dream” drowns those expecta
tions away with its depiction of
drug use, and then simply pres
ents absolute terror. Such a
descent does exist. Here it is, in
harrowing detail, masterfully
done.
"Requiem for a Dream”
Starring Ellen Burstyn, Jared
Leto, Jennifer Connelly and
Marlon Wayans. Directed by
Darren Aronofsky. Written by
Darren Aronofsky and Herbert
Selby, Jr. Unrated (graphic sex
ual and drug content, language,
violence) Playing at the Mary
Riempa Ross Film Theater.
