She said last year a Greek group gave the pro ceeds from a dance they held. They expected a few hundred dollars, but were pleasantly surprised. “They gave us $2000, Decker said. “That’s enough to fund our after school food program for a year." The new recreation center is expected to open in January 2002. Until then, Decker said they will make due with their temporary location. “The other night I stood outside and watched the ball go over the fence 22 times m the space of an hour.” Decker said. “I cant wait until we move Regents adjust quickly to jobs RESENTS from page 1 ent departments or campuses, is another of Ferlic’s goals, he said. This type of research bene fits everyone involved and helps increase cooperation among campuses, he said. “It'd be good to obliterate some of the traditional hostility among the four campuses,” he said. During Matzke and Ferlic’s freshmen terms, they may have to address an issue that’s divid ed the state - aborted fetal tissue research conducted at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The issue will also be on the forefront for the Legislature, where a new bill could prohibit the use of aborted fetal cells if a substitute is found. While Ferlic and Matzke agreed on tuition and financial aid issues, they disagreed on whether the research should continue. “To me, it's very simple,” Ferlic said. “I don’t think the uni versity should use surgically aborted cells for research.” Ferlic said the controversial research can jeopardize the uni versity's funding, which is , something NU should try to avoid. Matzke, on the other hand, said he hasn’t seen a direct cor relation between the use of aborted tissue and an increasing number of abortions in the state. Because of this fact, Matzke, who said he’s against abortion, said he could support the research. “I think both sides need to tone down the rhetoric,” Matzke said. “We’re talking about neu rons, not baby brains.” “It’d be good to obliterate some of the traditional hostility < among the four campuses." Randy Ferlic regent But both agreed researchers should continue to pursue and utilize alternative sources for the research. Although contentious issues seem to be everywhere, Regent Nancy O’Brien ofWaterloo said this year’s just like any other. O’Brien, who’s worked with Matzke and Ferlic before, said she had confidence in the board’s newest members. “I’m happy they're joining the board and I look forward to TWA files for bankruptcy; American acquires assets THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ST. LOUIS — Trans World Airlines will announce Wednesday its plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protec tion and accept a buyout by AMR Corp.’s American Airlines. TWA CEO Bill Compton briefed political leaders in Missouri on the deal via tele phone after the airline’s board approved it Tuesday evening. U.S. Rep. William Lacy Clay, a Democrat from St. Louis, said Compton told him the deal would be announced at 9 a.m. EST today in New York. A press conference will follow in St. Louis at 11 a.m. CST. ' “I think this is a good deal all the way around for TWA employees and Lambert Airport,” Clay told The Associated Press. "The people of St. Louis are the big winners in, this deal.” TWA spokeswoman Julia Bishop-Cross refused to com ment, as did a spokesman for AMR. While he was not given any financial details, Clay said Compton promised American would keep all of the airline’s union employees and that St. Louis would remain a hub. According to a report on The Wall Street Journal’s Web site, American will pay TWA $500 million and assume about $3 billion of aircraft operating leas es. TWA would attempt to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late Tuesday night or Wednesday, the Journal reported, citing peo ple close to the situation. AMR’s board met Tuesday evening to approve the offer fot TWA and to finalize a deal to buy $1.3 billion worth of assets from US Airways Group Inc., the Journal reported. American will reportedly acquire about 20 percent of US Airways assets. It's a deal that might help UAL Corp.’s United Airlines gain regulatory approval of its $4.3 billion pur chase of US Airways, according to analysts. If approved by the court and federal regulators, the buyout would become part of a larger deal turning Fort Worth-based American into a carrier holding 25 percent of the U.S. passenger market. It would also bring an end to TWA, an airline that traces its roots to the 1925 founding of 7 think this is a good deal all the way around for TWA employees and Lambert Airport. Western Air Express, catered to popes and movies stars, once ruled skies around the world with Pan American World and held that world in rapt attention during a 1985 hijacking and the 1996 crash of a flight from New York to Paris. If approved and completed, the deals would give Chicago based United and American control of more than half of the U.S. air travel market. Skeptics in Washington, including sever al U.S. Senators, expect Congress to hold hearings on the mergers. Director leaves UNLforfamily DIRECTOR from page 1 cellor for student affairs, said the search for a new Student Involvement director will begin soon. Griesen said Bugenhagen’s work as director had been nationally recognized, and her departure was a big loss to the university. The role of Student Involvement director is critical to campus life, Griesen said. “We’re anxious to continue the strong tradition of Student Involvement that Marilyn set forth,” he said. Daryl Swanson, director of Nebraska Unions, said Assistant Director of Student Involvement Diane Podolske would serve as the interim asso ciate director of the Nebraska Unions. Podolske has worked at UNL for more than 10 years, Swanson said. During Bugenhagen’s time as associate director of Nebraska Unions, a new Student Involvement office was opened, Swanson said. Biigenhagen played a major role in designing Student Involvement’s current office. “She left big shoes to fill,” Swanson said.
