Modern dance difficult to define BY BILLY SMUCK “What is modern dance?" The question perplexes dancers and nondancers alike. Most people either don’t have any idea what modern dance is, or they think they do but are oftentimes partially right at best. Professor Sara Semonis, who is a lecturer of dance at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln (specifically in the area of mod ern dance), said different peo ple will have different answers to that question because mod em dance is always in a cycle. “It’s an art form just like painting, photography and the ater,” Semonis said. “It’s a craft that is ever-changing.” Professor lisa Fusillo, who is head of the UNL dance depart ment, agreed modem dance has no concrete definition. “It is an all-encompassing term,” she said. Fusillo, who has a strong grasp of the history of modem dance, said it was an early 20th century dance that originated in America as a reaction against ballet because modern dance encourages more experimenta tion and creative freedom. “Initially those who organ ized the modern-dance move ment did so to break away from die primary dances of that time period, like ballet and ethnic dancing, to investigate their own personal expressions and choreography,” Fusillo said. Fusillo said one of the four pioneers of modern dance, Charles Weidman, was from Lincoln. Through its evolution, mod era dance has gone through a number of different stages and name changes. Fusillo said die new genera tion of dancers in the 1950s and 1960s, post-modern dancers, adopted the “anything goes” approach, separated them selves from the original modem dancers and focused less on technique and more on person al expression. In the past 40 years modem dance has branched out and changed even more. Over the years, many people have added their own interpretations, Working class hero shook up music, world LENNON from page 8 Keith Heckman, who has worked at Dietze Music, 1208 O St, since 1972, could not remem ber where he was when he heard the news, but he does remember how many of the Dietze cus tomers reacted the next day. “It was really a depressing sit uation,” Heckman said. "People would come in and say, ‘Hey, you here what just happened?’” The news had a significant impact on Dietze Music cus tomers because of Lennon’s influence on music. “We deal heavily in guitars, and he was such an icon for so many of our customers," Heckman said. “He was a guy that everyone wanted to be like." The music world was crushed by the news, but that wasn't the sole facet of society that felt the death. “Lennon was not only a giant in the music industry,” Heckman said, “he touched a lot of other lives. A lot of other segments of society felt his passing.” which have expanded what is now called modem dance. “Today, what we really are talking about is contemporary dance when we refer to modem dance,” Fusillo said. “It’s about defying the mys tique of classical ballet by breaking down the fantasy and getting back to reality.” Because of that, modern dancing is more easily defined by what it isn’t instead of what it is, and it is often defined in con trast to ballet Modern dance is different than ballet because it creates a dance language and relates more intimately to the music, Fusillo said. Semonis said UNL offers a bachelor’s of arts in dance, which certifies students to teach ballet and modern dance but does not offer a performance degree. Semonis said nondance majors could enroll in modem dance classes because there were no prerequisites and stu dents didn’t have to have prior dance experience. “That’s a misconception that many students have, that they need to have some formal training in order to take dance classes, which isn’t true,* she said. As far as the state of modem dance and its popularity in Lincoln, Semonis said there was a lot of dance in the Lincoln area through local studios, as well as on stage. “Modem dance doesn't have as high a calling as the other dances, but what there is of it in Lincoln is of high quality and very much supported by the community,” Semonis said. Groups such as the Modem Dance Collection, which is out of Omaha, and the Lincoln Wagon Thun Project keep mod em dance alive, Semonis said. Semonis, who recently moved to Lincoln and started teaching at UNL this semester, said she was interested in help ing the modem dance scene in Lincoln continue to grow. “Being new to the area, I would like to get involved with the community and see modem dance grow and flourish in the future,” she said. Lincolnites return to the chocolate factory BY SARAH SUMNER Christmas is in turmoil, Oompa Loompas are stopped from making their usual Christmas treats, and Santa needs help to save die holiday. Willy Wonka takes a step never before seen into the giving season to defeat the trouble-making Augustus Gloop and his cohorts. “A White Chocolate Christmas,” a play created by Lincoln actors and directors, opens at the Lincoln Community Playhouse, 2500 S. 56th St., on Saturday and runs through Dec. 23. The play's original concept was conceived by Rhonda Lake, the play's director, in 1998 after a playhouse production of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” a play adapted from Roald Dahl’s chil dren’s book about Willy Wonka. “A White Chocolate Christmas” was written by Gary Hall, who plays Willy Wonka. The writing began a year ago; changes to the script were made multiple times throughout the year, Hall said "I tossed portions of the script at Rhonda, and each time she tossed back a hundred more ideas,” Hall said “This led to sev eral other revisions, to add new ideas from that stimulating gang and to edit it for efficiency. “Anewplay has a fluidity that a published script doesn’t” Hall said he liked the combi nation of physical humor and intellectual wordplay and how the play could be understood on many levels. The 80-person cast of actors, dancers and singers, including children and adults, has been practicing for the past five weeks as changes were stUl being made. "Even during our rehearsals of the last weeks, we’ve been trim ming and touching up die script,” Hall said. The six original songs were written by Hall, but melodies were created by Darius Makaitis, who also directed the music in the playhouse’s recent production of “Grease.” Along with the original songs, there is a mix of traditional, famil iar music. The music director is Laurie Martinez-Lessman, and the choreographers are Bob and Steven Bender/DN Santa Claus (Tim Tidball) and Willy Wonka (Gary Hail) pair up in a wacky musical called'A White Chocolate Christmas.' Stephanie Chase of DancerschooL Hall said he hoped playgoers get a variety of experiences from the play “I want the playgoers to hear hie wordplay, see the humor, see their children dance and sing, and see the Wacky Wfonka return to the stage,” Hall said Southview Baptist “Experiencing the Heart of God - Expressing the Love of Christ* ft Bible Study: Sunday - 9:30 am Wednesday - 6:30 pm Sunday Worship: 10:45 am & 6:00pm 3434 S. 13th St. Pastor Matt Culbertson (402) 423-5062 svbcneb@aol.com Celebrate the Christmas Joy at ST.
