Easy-Bake dessert wins award BY SHARON KOLBET It’s amazing what you can do with a light bulb. With the Christmas cookie season rapidly approaching, stu dents living in residence halls who are short on space but still craving holiday goodies, can learn from Lincoln fifth-grader Shalene Weyers. Shalene cooks with a counter top toy known as the Easy-Bake Oven, and this fall she wowed judges in the Hasbro Easy-Bake Oven Baker of the Year competi tion. The 10-year-old daughter of Nancy and Jay Weyers used her Easy-Bake Oven to design a dessert called the Triple Banana Sundae Surprise. After being selected in November as a finalist in the (national contest, Shalene and her family received a trip to New York for the final bake-off. “It was completely unexpect ed,” Nancy Weyers said. “I had given Shalene the con test information this summer and told her that whenever she said she was bored she could go and whip something up in her Easy Bake.” After weeks of experimenta tion and taste tests, Shalene came up with a recipe that proved to be a real winner. As one of five finalists selected from hundreds of children ages 8 to 11, Shalene was flown to New York to compete against a 9-year old from Texas and her Chocolate Mousse Cake, a 10-year-old from Washington state rith a "Candy Clown," a 9-year-old from Rhode Island who made fruit pizza and a 10-year-old from Minnesota with a Chocolate Cream Dream. While Shalene didn't win the grand prize, she did finish as the runner-up. For her work, Shalene received a $1,000 savings bond, a one-year supply of Easy-Bake bake sets and $200 in Hasbro toys. Shalene said she was just a lit tle nervous during the bake-off, but her famous dessert turned out just fine. Pearl Harbor marks attack anniversary THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii - This sprawling naval base drew silent for one minute Thursday to mark the time 59 years ago that Japanese planes attacked the U.S. Pacific fleet and plunged the nation into World War II. A soft mist started falling as moment of silence began at 7:55 a.rrL, creating a brilliant rainbow over Ford Island. It lasted until the American flag was raised five minutes later over the gleaming white USS Arizona Memorial during the Navy’s annual com memorative ceremony. “Why do we remember Pearl Harbor above and beyond all others?” asked Adm. Dennis Blair, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command. “In part, because we considered it an act of treachery. “But did we think we defined the rules by which others act? Did we think we could never be hit at home? This was one of the great lessons of Pearl Harbor to Americans." About 240 survivors, veter ans, dignitaries, military officials and guests attended the services on the memorial that straddles the battleship sunk in the attack, a tomb for about 1,000 of its crewmen. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and other military bases on Oahu lasted two hours. The Japanese military sank or heavily damaged 21 ships, destroyed or damaged323 aircraft, killed 2,388 people and wounded 1,178. “It's very emotional, it truly is,” said Woodrow Wilson Derby, an 82-year-old retired math teacher from San Diego who was a petty officer on the USS Nevada. “The bad memories have gone out of my mind. I’m just glad to be alive.” 7 had given Shalene the contest information this summer and told her that whenever she said she was bored she could go and whip something up in her Easy-Bake.” Nancy Weyers baker’s mother When asked how long it takes to bake under a 100-watt bulb, Shalene said she usually allows 10 minutes per cake. While at the final bake-off held in the Four Seasons Hotel, each contestant was provided with two Easy-Bake Ovens to work with. “This makes it go faster, you can have two cakes going at the same time,” Shalene said.
