MURAL from page 1
best designs, Weiss said.
"The big message we want
ed to show was kind of a hopeful
message and show the kitchen
is a welcoming place for people
that wanted to go there,” said
Stork, a junior.
After guests at the kitchen
prepared the 160-foot wall for
use, students enlarged the
design to scale, then drew it on
Nov. 7 by using a grid system,
Weiss said.
The class worked with Mural
Mural Graphics, which helped
them with the design; Diamond
Vogel paints, which donated the
paint; and Carter Lumber,
which donated ladders she said.
Weiss said the students did
not start painting until before
Thanksgiving, but would like to
finish the project by the end of
semester.
The large mural incorporat
ed the logo of Matt Talbot
Kitchen: “Serving the working
poor, homeless and hungry,”
and its message of welcoming
all people.
“We wanted to use a lot of
different colors and show diver
sity,"Stork said.
Blue said the impact on
guests at the kitchen was enor
mous.
"It’s been a group effort,
mingling people together from
all walks of life,” she said.
Kirsten Nelson, a freshman
general studies major, said the
project had an impact
“I just think it is neat we are
doing a service project for
something other than just a
project that will only be seen in
class,” she said.

Children tell government
why they will say no to drugs
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON - Asked what
keeps them away from illicit
drugs, more than 25,000 children
replied: music, family and sports.
Music was the No. 1 factor, fol
lowed by family and football, the
government said Tuesday.
After that came friendship,
dancing, “me,” basketball, com
puters, soccer and biking.
The responses - ranging from
a single word to a photograph to
expressions in art music or poet
ry - were collected as part of a
four-month youth marketing
campaign for children ages 9 to 17
that was funded by Congress.
Spilling their hearts through
the Internet and postcards, many
of the children used phrases such
as “my whole outlook” and “confi
dence,” “self-esteem,” “my life,”
“my dreams” and “self-respect”
for wanting to stay drug-free.
One child revealed that his
“dad died because of drugs.”
Another recalled how“my brother
ruined his life and our family
because of drugs.”
The campaign, which began
Sept 1, is being overseen by Barry
McCaffrey, director of the White
House Office of National Drug
Control Policy. It is slated to end
early next month.
Among the ads featured: a tel
evision commercial titled
“Dancing,” in which children talk
about their love of dance and how
it motivates them to keep from
experimenting with drugs.
One of the most encouraging
trends for parents, McCaffrey
noted, is that young people who
are at an age when it might seem
trendy to buck authority seem to
be listening to their elders more
than anyone thought.
“The words and actions of
parents, or other adult influ
encers, are more effective than
they may think in keeping their
children away from drugs,” he
said in a statement
McCaffrey also pointed to a
1999 survey by the Department of
Health and Human Services
showing that 72 percent of 12- to
17-year-olds have never used
illicit drugs.
The campaign's $22 million
budget comes from Congress. It is
part of a five-year, $185 million-a
year national anti-drug multime
dia campaign directed at youth
that began in 1999. Congress
approved three years’ funding,
and next year's budget is expected
to stay the same, said Don Maple,
one of the office's senior policy
analysts assigned to the National
Youth Anti-Drug Media
Campaign.
One of the main goals is to
create an instantly recognizable
slogan or “brand,” like Smokey
Bear, Maple said in an interview.
The “What's Your Anti-Drug?”
advertising campaign used die
Internet to collect two-thirds of
the responses. The rest came
through mail, spokesman Robert
Udowitzsaid.
Targeted ads feature slogans
such as: “Parents. TheAnti-Dmg.”
Others include: “Love. The
Anti-Drug” and
“Communication. The Anti
Drug”
For ads aimed at youths, it’s
“My Anti-Drug.”
The idea, Maple said, was to
help children “realize that most
kids have something in their lives,
maybe more than one thing, that
keeps them from using drugs.
“One of the messages we are
trying to communicate to chil
dren is that not using drugs is nor
mal. Some of the kids... get the
idea that everybody's trying
drugs, and it's just not true,” he
said.
Woes lessen holiday liqht time
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
SAN FRANCISCO - With
electricity and natural-gas sup
plies in short supply, energy
companies and state officials
have asked Californians to delay
turning on Christmas lights until
well after nightfall and to keep
thermostats set at 68 degrees.
Energy bills already are
increasing dramatically, more
than 50 percent in some cases.
Pacific Gas and Electric Co. cus
tomers face an average bill of $77
this December. Last December,
the average charge was $50, and
PG&E said customers should
expect much higher bills through
the winter.
Utility officials said illumi
nating Christmas lights would be
cheaper after 7 p.m. or 8 p.m.
when electricity demand falls.
The same advice goes for
appliances, which are less
expensive to use before 4 p.m. or
after 7 p.m. Furnaces should be
kept to 68 degrees maximum and
turned back to 55 degrees when
not at home, officials said.
Even as the call went out to
conserve energy, Gov. Gray Davis
switched on the lights decorating
the 56-foot white fir at the state
Capitol, continuing a tradition
dating to 1931. After five min
utes, die lights were tinned off
until after the peak electricity
period.
“In some parts of California,
people are going without power,"
Davis said. “I would love to keep
the lights on. But it’s important
that we all pull together to reduce
the strain on the grid.”
The big jump in prices is
partly due to decreasing natural
gas supplies nationwide, said
Claudia Chandler, assistant exec
utive director of the California
Energy Commission. Low natu
ral gas prices over the past few
years led to a decline in drilling
and production. Supplies from
new exploration won't be on line
for at least two years, she said.
PG&E said that while prices
are up dramatically, supplies of
gas are not threatened because it
has guaranteed contracts.
Electricity shortages are
plaguing the state. On Monday
and Tuesday, Stage Two emer
gencies were declared, meaning
electricity reserves had Men to 5
percent and suppliers were
allowed to cut power to commer
cial customers with interruptible
contracts.
Stage Three emergencies
indicate electrical reserves have
fallen below 1.5 percent, trigger
ing imposition of rotating power
outages in the entire system.
