Perlman approves Culture Center plans CENTER from page 1 dents from attending events at the center. Also, the acoustics are bad and the seating is limited, which makes it difficult to bring in big-name speakers or bands. "The present facility is so inadequate,” Griesen said. “The outside is charming, but, func tionally, it’s not good.” The current center works as a lounge and a meeting place for student organizations, Griesen said, but not much else. The new center also would house UNL faculty and staff members who work directly with minority students. The minority assistance staff is currently located in the Canfield Administration build ing. Griesen said he also envi sioned a computer lab in the new Culture Center and some sort of academic support unit. Besides beginning work immediately on the project statement, Griesen said he would also contact the Nebraska State Historical Society and Alpha Phi sorority. It’s important to make sure nearby property holders don’t have concerns about the union addition, he said. He will also contact the University of Nebraska Foundation to formally request funding. Griesen said the project would need money from indi vidual donors and corporate and foundation grants. Employees of the Culture Center need a higher quality facility to better serve minority students, Russell said. “Having a new culture cen ter would be great,” she said. “We need a new one to help the groups we have here.” Being located in the union would help attendance at Culture Center events, Russell said. Now, the center has a lounge and a pool table, but nobody knows about them, she said. "This is what it’s made for - to chill out and get together,” she said. “Everyone who opens this door is opening themselves up to a new culture.” Shane Ostermeier, a gradu ate assistant at the center, said the administration would be asking students and Culture Center employees for input on the new building. Ostermeier said it was important student concerns were finally being heard. “This is something students have been working on behind the scenes for a long time,” he said. “It's good to see the administration has taken it to the level it needed to be taken to.” The Culture Center houses student organizations like the Mexican American Student Association, the Afrikan Peoples Union, the University of Nebraska Intertribal Exchange, Lincoln Friends of Foreign Students, International Students and the Malaysian Student Association. Cheney urges concession while Gore contests in court ELECTION from page 1 Gore allies said he won't con sider quitting before Judge N. Sanders Sauls rules on his request for hand recounts in two counties and the Florida Supreme Court settles the appeal that will undoubtedly be lodged fay the los ing side. The U.S. Supreme Court is considering the case in a sepa rate appeal filed fay Bush. Gore lieutenant Warren Christopher also mentioned a Democratic lawsuit in Seminole County, where GOP officials were allowed to add information to thousands of absentee ballot applications already submitted to election officials. Their options running low, Gore aides are pin ning more of their hopes on the case in east Florida. “It's the late innings," Christopher said on CBS. “But it’s far from over." The former secre tary of state, also appearing on CNN, charged that Cheney“is try ing to hurry history along.” And when would Gore con cede? “I can assure you that the vice president, when the time comes, will concede in a very gracious way. He understands his obliga tions to the people of the country," Christopher said, not predicting when that time would coma “It depends upon when the Florida courts rule. The date of December 12, of course, is an important date,” he said. States select their electors Dec. 12, and the college meets Dec. 18. Tapes are peek into court TAPES from page 1 As younger justices who have grown up with pervasive media coverage take seats on the bench, the court will proba bly relax its stance on media coverage, he said. Larry Walklin, a broadcast ing professor, understands the battle between news-hungry journalists and judges who want to maintain privacy in their courtrooms. Walklin serves as the coordi nator of a media committee charged with acting as a liaison between Nebraska courts and the media. Walklin said he can under stand why reporters want access to the court, and he said he believes live television cover age might improve public awareness about the court “It would be a very educa tional opportunity for the gen eral public,” he said. But, he said, the court holds all the cards in the matter and wants to avoid any extra issues when dealing with such impor tant and complicated prob lems. “The court likes to be secluded for thought,” he said. NU team makes it to computer finals BY CHARLIE KAUFFMAN After winning the regional competition for the American Association for Computing Machinery, a team of UNL stu dents has earned a trip to the ACM World Finals to be held March 7-11,2001 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Seniors Lucas Sabalka, Joshua Brown and Yixin "Peter" Guo beat a field of competitors to advance to the world finals. The win marks the second time in three years a team from University of Nebraska-Lincoln has advanced to the World Finals. “TVvo years ago, when we last went to an international, it was in the Netherlands,” undergradu ate adviser Chuck Riedesel said. “This year, I’m excited, I enjoy it, r Two years ago, when we last went to an international it was in the Netherlands. This year, I’m excited, I enjoy it, and I’m looking for another team so I can go to Hawaii next year ” Chuck Riedesel undergraduate adviser and I’m looking for another team so I can go to Hawaii next year.” Riedesel said replacements are needed for next year’s com petitions since this year’s team was composed entirely of sen iors. Sabalka said the team had to overcome a late start in practice. “The first time we went [to the World Finals], we practiced for almost 11 months,” Sabalka said. “This time, we started in the Chuck Riedesel undergraduate adviser summer.” The competition gives teams five hours to answer six to eight questions using a set of provided equipment. The team who fin ishes first takes home a $9,000 prize. “These can be very challeng ing questions, they’re actually programming assignments.” Riedesel said. “These team members have really been taking this seriously.” Work begins on alum dub CLUB from page 1 providing an additional 20,000 square-foot building able to accommodate 1,500 people. Nebraska Alumni Association Spokeswoman Andrea Cranford said the cost to join the Champions Club is $20,000, which gives members access to the club for 25 years. Some of the benefits of membership include a person alized parking space across horn the stadium, as well as 12 guest passes for Champions Club activities. Paquette said celebrity Huskers will make appearances at the club before each home game. Pre-game and post-game entertainment will also be pro vided to members. Paquette would like to make the Champions Club an inviting place where fans and their fam ilies can gather before and after games. Td date, 150 founding mem berships have been sold, and an additional 200 are still available. “What is important for peo ple to remember is that the Champions Club is financed entirely through club member ships. No taxpayer or tuition dollars are involved in building the facility,” Paquette said. “We feel it is a win-win situ ation for everyone.” Internship Program in Shenzhen, ctiina Spend a year teaching English conversation hi a school hi Shenzhen, China's fast-growing economic miracle adjacentto Hong Kong.
