Spirit of giving alive
with Angel project

Students wanting to spread a
little Christmas cheer beyond
their own stockings can do so by
simply taking an Angel off trees
stationed around campus and
town.
The Angel Tree project is
sponsored by the Salvation Army,
local businesses and organiza
tions and the general public, said
Judy Timperley, a Salvation Army
administrative assistant
The trees are at different areas
of Lincoln, including the
University of Nebraska -Lincoln,
and are adorned with tags sug
gesting gifts for sponsors to pur
chase.
Those who buy any item can
return the unwrapped gift to any
of die tree sites or to the Salvation
Army, 5701 Dogwood Dr. Cash
donations and checks made out
to Salvation Army are also accept
ed, Timperley said.
The Angel Trees on campus
are sponsored by the Residence
Hall Association and the
Association of Students of the
University of Nebraska.
RHA took 540 tags, Timperley
said.
“Total, we have possibly 4500
tags at different locations in
Lincoln,” she said.
The trees will be on campus
for two weeks at the following
sites: the Nebraska Union; Selleck
Residence Hall; Cather, Pound,
Neihaidt Residence Halls; Harper,
Schramm, Smith Residence Halls;
Abel, Sandoz Residence Halls and
the Nebraska East Union.

Angel Ifee.
“I think during die Christmas
season, many of us get wrapped
up in our own Christmas list,” she
said. “It is important to know that
not everybody has the means to
support their own family and pro
vide gifts for the holiday season.”
Any student who takes a tag
can return the gift to any of the
trees on campus in the next two
weeks, she said.
Timperley said the gifts are
then placed on shelves, just like at
a store, in a room where parents
can choose toys for their children.
Although the Angel Trees have
been sponsored by the Salvation
Army for a number of years, this is
the fourth year they will be spon
sored on campus Hegr said.
"We are trying to publicize it
more this year,” Hegr said.
RHA and ASUN are publiciz
ing this year's project by holding a
Angel Tbee Project Celebration on
December 8™ at 8 p.m. at the
Culture Center. The event will
include food, drinks and music.

Student Code of Conduct for any
student or faculty member to dis
close any details of a disciplinary
hearing involving another stu
dent.
Part of the newspaper’s con
cern was that there may be a pos
sibility for a violent crime to be
reported to and prosecuted sole
ly by Judicial Affairs. Serious
cases are referred to the criminal
courts but students may not be
prosecuted criminally because
the university and the courts use
different standards of evidence.
Judicial Affairs Director
Rosemary Blum said she could
not remember any case like that
in her year-and-a-half on the job.
"Usually it is reported in the
newspapers before I see it,” Blum
said of how she often learns of
potential conduct code viola
tions.
Griesen said that in serious
cases the university usually
requires that the details of any
penalties must be released as
part of the punishment
In some cases, the victim may
dictate whether the case is prose
cuted criminally.
"It’s possible we might have a
serious case where the victim
doesn’t want to report or the
criminal charges have been
dropped," Griesen said. In those
cases, the university would be the
only ones prosecuting.
"The reason we don’t have a
reasonable doubt standard is
because we are trying to protect
the community, not just punish
individuals,” Griesen said!
Both Griesen and Blum said
they would be happy to release
statistical information about the
cases.

Mashek said he and Schafer
will consider everyone when
making decisions about the com
mittee.
“Joel and I will protect every
one as a student, not as a person
of color, but as a student,” he said.
McCune said that minority
students don’t feel represented by
ASUN.
“Many students of color feel
like they don’t have any voting
power and that ASUN in itself is a
white organization,” he said.

faith the selected committee
would be inclusive without seats
given to any particular minority
organization.
"If you look amongst your
selves, we have a very diverse
group of people,” he said. “We
achieved this without any pro
portionment"
Former ASUN President
Andy Schuerman encouraged
the senate to reserve seats for
minority groups because ASUN
has a history of emphasizing
diversity.
“This is a really good oppor
tunity to put your money where
your mouth is, and to ensure that
there is some action to our
words,” he said. “You really have a
chance to say that you have a
commitment to diversity.”
Clements said her failed
amendment showed that ASUN
does not want to incorporate
diversity into the constitutional
convention.
"I am very disappointed that
ASUN has not gotten to the point
where they recognize the need to
truly value diversity,” she said.

Downtown beating,
robbing injures man
A Lincoln man was beaten
up and robbed Tuesday evening
as he walked downtown.
The 40-year-old victim was
walking west on G St. between
10th and 9th streets shortly
before 7 p.m. when one of three
men walking behind him asked
for spare change, Lincoln Police
Ofc. Katherine Finnell said.
Then one of the three men
hit the victim in the head and
demanded money. The victim
yielded his wallet, losing $50.
The three men, who
appeared to be teenagers, all
wore dark clothing and blue
bandannas on their faces.
Transient man arrested
after breaking into car
University Police caught
someone in the act of breaking
into a car thanks to reports of a
suspicious person in the area

Police arrested the 30-year
old man for theft after they
found him sitting in a Jeep with
his pockets stuffed with CDs in
the commuter and faculty lot
north of Memorial Stadium at
11:20 a.m., Assistant Chief Mylo
Bushing said.
Bobby Rogers, who is a tran
sient, initially told police the
Jeep belonged to his cousin Jeff.
Police called the car’s owner,
who was not named Jeff, and
then arrested Rogers.
Police were alerted to
Rogers' activities by someone
who called to report it. Bushing
encouraged people to report
any suspicious activity, espe
cially if someone is lurking in a
parking lot.
