Swimming, diving play host to tough meet
BY TOBY BURGER
The Nebraska swimming and diving
team will be keeping busy this weekend as
they play host to the Husker Shoot Out and
the Sprint Classic at the Devaney Center
Pool.
The 18th-ranked Husker men hope to
regain their Husker Shoot Out and Sprint
Classic titles. The team will be challenged by
capable teams such as UNLV, Washington
and NCAA Division II Drury University.
Retaining the title also is the aim on the
21st-ranked women’s side, but they too will
face stiff competition in UNLV, four-time
NCAA Division n National Champion Drury
and Division in power Kenyon College.
Interim Assistant Coach Doug Humphrey
said the meet should be hotly contested on
both the men’s and women’s side. He said all
teams had a chance to come away with the
tides.
“It should be a dogfight,” Humphrey said.
“On paper, it's anybody’s meet. I like our
chances simply because we are home, and
we don’t like losing.”
Both teams are attempting to rebound
from close season opening losses.
Texas A&M narrowly beat the Huskers
166-127. The loss came after the Huskers won
seven of the 16 events in the competition.
The loss to Colorado State for the women
was even closer than the men's. The women
fell in a slim 156-144 meet to the Rams. The
women won eight of the 16 events in the con
test
Yet those losses are more of a growing
pain than a setback according to Interim
Assistant Coach Jon Haggerty.
“Basically, if we can go through the year
just swimming faster each time ... we can’t
ask for anything more, and they can’t ask any
thing more of themselves either,” Haggerty
said.
The Huskers are striving for a complete
team effort in this weekend’s meets.
“There is no one person we’re looking for
to move into any spots,” Humphrey said.
“We’re just looking for everybody, a whole
group, team effort and coming together as a
group, as a whole.”
The Husker Shoot Out starts today at 11
a.m. with the evening session at 6:30. The
meet continues on Saturday and Sunday at
11 a.m. The Sprint Classic begins at 6:30
Saturday evening. The Classic is being tele

Huskers look to continue perfection
VOLLEYBALL from page 12
Pilakowski in BU's Oct. 11 loss to
the Huskers.
Cepero posted a season
high U kills on .611 hitting per
centage and also had 32 assists
to lead Nebraska to a .388 hitting
efficiency.
Pilakowski slammed down
11 kills at a .529 hitting percent
age and dug seven balls.
Holmquist also racked up 11
kills at a .500 hitting percentage
and added eight blocks.
The Huskers defense
reduced Baylor’s team hitting
percentage to a mere .052 and
out-blocked the Bears 12-2.
Baylor is coining off a two
game losing streak as it fell to
Colorado last weekend in four
games and lost to No. 23 Texas
A&M on Wednesday in three.
The Bears’ record going into
Saturday's match is at an even
14-14.
“Baylor is a dangerous
team,” Cook said.
“They can have a really great
night one night and then the
next night struggle through five
games. That makes them dan
gerous.”
The focus of Nebraska is very
clear this weekend, Cook said.
“Just win, baby. And play
Nebraska volleyball.” Cook said.
