Students voice opinions about new scale
BY MARGARET BEHM
The student government
meeting Wednesday night was
packed not only with senators,
but with students who wanted to
voice their opinion.
About 20 students showed up
to the Association of Students of
the University of Nebraska meet
ing to voice their opinion on res
olution #4, which would have
recommended a change to the
university’s grading scale.
The ASUN Senate rejected
the measure Wednesday 14 to
nine with one senator abstaining.
Joel Schafer, ASUN president,
said he was pleased that students
showed up to the meeting.
“Their opinion was heard,”
he said. “I think that was a good
thing that came out of this.”
All of the students spoke at
the open forum at the beginning
of the meeting.
David Johnson, a junior civil
engineering major, said the
majority of students who he
knows told him they were against
the resolution.
"A lot of students I talked to
didn’t see a need for this,” he said.
Mike Butterfield, a senior civil
engineering major, said he was in
favor of the resolution because it
would improve the university’s
image.
"Making this change is one
step we should take to increase
our credibility,” he said.
Ethan Rowley, a sophomore
advertising major, questioned
who the senators were trying to
stand for.
“Is this ASUN or APUN?" he
asked. “Are you representing pro
fessors or students?”
Students don’t want a
tougher grading scale, Rowley
said.
"Maybe I’m not hip or cool,
and I’m not in touch with stu
dent’s needs, but I can’t see stu
dents asking to be graded hard
er,” he said.
Jake Wobig, a senior political
science major, said the current
grading scale doesn’t push stu
dents to try for a higher grade.
“If you really want to improve
this university and we have an
incentive not to excel, than it’s
not going to happen,” he said.
Sean Zehtab, a junior biology
major, said the new scale would
hurt students who are barely
hanging on academically.
“This isn’t Harvard,” he said.
Wobig said the university’s
grading scale doesn’t accurately
represent students’ efforts.
“Maybe I’m not hip or
cool, and I’m not in
touch with student’s
needs, but I can’t see
students asking to be
graded harder,
Ethan Rowley
sophomore advertising major
"When I turn in my GPA to an
employer, he’s going to have to
take it with a grain of salt,” he
said.
Senators should vote for the
sake of the university, not just for
student concerns, Wobig said.
“(ASUN senators aren’t) a
rubber stamp for the public opin
ion on campus,” he said.
