Regent candidates respond to attacks ■ Incumbent Drew Miller says John Breslow spread false information. BYJILLZEMAN With the general election quickly approaching, candidates running in the 4th District NU Board of Regents race have begun the personal attacks. University of Nebraska Regent Drew Miller issued a statement Monday accusing his challenger, John Breslow, of dodging debates and spreading false information. Breslow, who won May's pri mary election with nearly double the number of votes Miller received, has denied the allega tions. Miller accused Breslow’s sup porters of distributing campaign material that labels Miller a “pro abortion Nazi” because Miller supported fetal-tissue research conducted at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The brochure was handed out at the Otoe County Fair in Syracuse and did not contain a name disclosing who paid for or distributed the information. Breslow denied any connec tion to the brochure. “My material only talks about my vision for the University of Nebraska,” he said. "Everything in it is 100-percent positive.” In his statement, Miller also questioned a comment Breslow made at a Cass County Republican Party event on Oct. 2. According to Miller, Breslow said national groups that once donated to UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources have stopped donat ing because of the high adminis trative turnover. Miller said he questioned the validity of Breslow’s statement and disagreed with it. But Breslow said Miller’s charge was untrue. At the event, Breslow said national groups have cut funding because the institute doesn't have enough money to conduct many types of research - nothing to do with leadership turnover. Another of Miller’s com plaints is Breslow’s hesitancy to participate in public debates, Miller said. “(Breslow) throws out face less charges that aren’t true, and I can't even get him to come to a debate,” he said. But Breslow said he’s avoid ing Miller’s challenges for a rea son. Breslow said he asked Miller to sign a pledge for the two candi dates to run positive campaigns. The pledge, which Breslow said he sent to Miller three or four weeks ago, asks Miller to agree to run a campaign free from nega tive attacks. But Breslow said Miller did not sign the pledge and instead requested a debate, which Breslow declined. "I asked Drew to sign the pledge to run a positive cam paign, and until he does that, I’m not going to talk to him about debates,” Breslow said. DN photographer wins national photo contest FROM STAFF REPORTS A photo of NU soccer player Karina LeBlanc trying to block a penalty kick brought top honors for a Daily Nebraskan photogra pher. Mike Warren, a UNL post graduate student and Daily Nebraskan photographer, won first place in the sports photography category of the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence contest. The photo, which ran in the Daily Nebraskan, shows Karina LeBlanc trying to block a Notre Dame penalty kick during the November 1999 NCAA quarterfinals. The ball hit the goal post and bounced out. Notre Dame later won the game on penal ty kicks. The photo won first place in both the regional and national Society for Professional Journalists sports photo contests. Warren’s interest in pho tography was sparked by his parents, who own a camera shop in Flemington, NJ. He is a graduate of Delaware Valley Regional High School in Frenchtown, NJ. Warren said the photo was taken with a Canon IN RS, with a 300-mm lens and 800-speed Fuji film.
