N.H.student arrested in beating death ■The victim wasaleaderofa gay campus group. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON - A fellow Gallaudet University student was charged Tuesday in the beating death of a freshman who was deaf, had cerebral palsy and was a leader of a gay campus group. Police arrested Thomas Minch, 18, of Greenland, N.H., also a freshman at the nation's only university for the deaf and hearing-impaired. He was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Eric Franklin Plunkett, 19. Police said the men had a personal dispute that erupted in a physical fight that led to Plunkett’s death. Plunkett was found in his dormitory room Thursday night after a student had asked a school official to check on him when he had not been seen for more than a day. Police say Plunkett appeared to have died of blows to the head. A police spokesman, Sgt. Joe Gentile, said police were examin ing a chair that was in the dorm room as a possible murder weapon. Police also won’t discuss motive in the slaying or whether Plunkett's involvement in a cam pus gay group was a factor. Plunkett, a freshman from Burnsville, Minn., was secretary of the Lambda Society, a gay and lesbian organization of about 20 students. Police have said all along that they were not investi gating the killing as a hate crime. Nevertheless, students have expressed concerns about a recent increase in anti-gay activ ities on campus. Several gay stu dents were targets of disparaging comments in the days before Plunkett’s death, and anti-gay slurs have been found on memo boards, according to the Human Rights Campaign, a gay and les bian political organization that met Monday with five students and faculty members at Gallaudet. Gallaudet was established by Congress in 1864 and is the nation’s only liberal arts universi ty for the deaf and hearing impaired. It has about 2,000 stu dents. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEWYORK- Health insurers have generally agreed to cover the newly approved RU-486 abortion pill, according to a sur vey of leading managed care plans. The health insurers, includ ing heavyweights Aetna, UnitedHealthCare and CIGNA, will cover the abortion pill as a standard benefit. PacifiCare will leave the decision up to its doc tors, because it considers the pill a new method of performing abortions, rather than a new drug. Humana Inc. and Kaiser Permanente said they are still deciding whether to cover the pill. In keeping with standard abortion coverage, insurers will give employers the choice of whether to offer the benefit to their workers. Recycle your Daily Nebraskan ...or else. Danco Laboratories Inc , which is selling the abortion pill under the brand namg Mifeprex, said it should be avail able later this month. The FDA* approved Mifeprex last Thursday. A price has not be set on Mifeprex, though including doctor visits and counseling it is expected to cost about the same as a surgical abortion - about $700. Coverage of new medical technology and new drugs has become a tricky issue facing health insurers trying to keep r control of rising health costs. Often when the Food and Drug Administration approves a new drug, a managed care company then reviews the drug’s benefits before deciding whether to cover it. What made the abortion pill different from other new drugs is that the pills is only dispensed directly from a physician’s office and not through a pharmacy. Thus plans such as United have decided to cover the abor tion pill as a standard medical benefit rather than a drug bene fit. W.C.’s < Downtown Penny Pitchers Every Wednesday Friday.
