speech is a sound byte.
Washington’s persona exudes
the notion he’s one step ahead.
It works against him here.
The player cast is littered
with actors far older than high
school age, which shows, espe
cially in Bertier (Ryan Hurst),
the spirited defensive captain,
who meets tragedy midway
through the film. There, running
back-turned-linebacker Petey
(Donald Faison) and beach-boy
quarterback Sunshine (Kip
Pardue) produce “Titans’” one
strange turn of events.
To keep the kids plugged
into the film is Yoast’s 9-year-old
daughter, Cheryl (Hayden
Pantierre), who watches game

Hunsicker excels in business, sports, design
HUNSICKER from page >
Despite the heavy emphasis
on the business side of clothing
design, Hunsicker said creativity
is still a big part of merchandis
ing.
"Not only do you have to keep
up on the trends,” she said, “but
you also have to be able to pres
ent something in an original
way.”
The merchandiser, Hunsicker
said, sets the mood for the prod
uct
“It’s endless the things you
can do to set a mood,” she said.
“When you’re selling an idea, the
trick is to know your audience
and create a mood they under
stand.
u worn ao any gooa 10 laxe,
say, a product aimed at teenagers
and create something that would
probably only appeal to someone
older," she said.
Hunsicker also spends her
time as treasurer of Montage, a
textile, clothing and design club.
Montage will hold a clothing
exhibition at the Nebraska Union
in January.
Besides being a stand-out
student, Hunsicker has had to
balance a school schedule with
the demands of being a Division I
athlete.
"You get used to it,” she said.
“I've had years and years of prac
tice at being a student athlete.
The only thing you can do is
schedule things around prac
tice.”
Wendy Wiess, an associate
professor in textile, clothing and
design was also impressed with
Hunsicker’s devotion to her
school work while she was on the
swim team.
“She was very focused on her
projects and didn't let sports
interfere,” Weiss said.
Hunsicker is a “complete”
student, Weiss said.
“I’m always happy when a
merchandising student can do
well in the design side of the col
lege,” she said.
Hunsicker said she had no
trouble focusing on school while
being an athlete.
“When I’m busy, I find that
I'm more focused and stay on
taskbetter,” shesaid. “When all of
my time is accounted for, it does
n’t give me a chance to slack off.
“Also, the biggest reason I
came to Nebraska was the
incomparable support this uni
versity gives its student-athletes.”
Hunsicker’s involvement in
sports also helped her under
stand the team concept that is
essential in the textile industry.
“This industry moves so fast
that there is no way someone
could do everything,” she said.
Weiss agreed, and said that
having a student like Hunsicker,
who is familiar with team con
cepts, can make a group run
smoothly.
Hunsicker used up her sports
eligibility last year and said she
went through a sort of “time
shock” when the school year
started.
“I had all of this time and
nothing to do with it,” she said.
Hunsicker has used that time
to focus more on her studies and
still helps with the swim team
when she can. •
She also worked as an intern
for Von Maur last summer and
said the practical experience was
helpful
“I was glad to see how the
retail end of merchandising

merchandising.
works,” she said. “I can do all the
class work I want, but without
experience, it doesn’t do me a lot
of good.”
Although the experience was
nice, Hunsicker said the lack of
creative input in her position was
a bit frustrating.
“Von Maur is very specific on
where they want displays and
how they want them to look,” die
said.
But the job did teach her how
to be a true professional, and,
despite the fun she had swim
ming for NU, Hunsicker said she

is ready to move on and focus on
the professional side of life.
“It's kind of funny,” Hunsicker
said. "I spent four years as an ath

schools in the nation, and it takes

about me”
on a block. Her performance is
appropriately precocious, as it
falls in line with the rest of the
film.
And maybe the safe bet that
“Titans” hedges on is its most
disappointing attribute. It turns
the strength of a true story - a~
story of boiling, painful emo
tions bubbling to the surface
right on the football field - into a
feel-good fairy tale.
A positive message? No
problem. But to drench it in a
