    Arts and Sciences Colleges is
key to university, candidate says
INTERVIEW from page 1
Patrick Dussault, a chem
istry professor, said all of the
dean candidates had been
interesting.
Dussault said the new arts
and sciences dean needed to
be a strong advocate of the
college and pull all the depart
ments together.
Thomas Rinkevich, acting
chairman of classics and reli
gious studies, agreed that all
four candidates had been
impressive.
Rinkevich said each of the
candidates all had different
styles, but each seemed confi
dent and handled questions
well.
The new dean needs to
have fortitude, flexibility and
friendliness, Rinkevich said.
He or she also needs to
work to overcome the mistrust
that oftentimes lies between
faculty members and admin
istrators, he said.
“These four candidates
went out of their way to sug
gest that they were interested
in the College of Arts and
Sciences,” Rinkevich said.
“They basically seem to be
qualified.”

he said.
Susanna Finnell, UNL direc
tor of admissions, said more
students are staying at UNL
because the university is foster
ing a students’ culture.
Learning communities, Red
Letter Day and New Student
Enrollment are factors that help
boost enrollment and retention
rates, she said.
Recruitment efforts have
intensified, and Finnell said she
hoped enrollment would con
tinue to rise in the coming years.
“Students feel they’re
becoming a member of the
community,” she said.
Other figures released in the
enrollment report include:
■ UNL’s student population
rose .6 percent, or 126 students.
■ The University of
Nebraska at Omaha’s enroll
ment jumped 215 students, or
1.6 percent.
■ The greatest percentage
increase on NU campuses
occurred at the University of
Nebraska Medical Center, with
4.1 percent, or 105 students.
■ The University of
Nebraska at Kearney saw a
decrease in enrollment, with a
decline of 4 percent, or 274 stu

■ UNL’s College of
Engineering and Technology
and College of Fine and
Performing Arts had enrollment
increases of more than 4 per

Nebraska Game and Parks
has no control over how the
farmers use the water, so levels
can fall quite low, he said.
Empty and dry rivers are
also common in southwest
Nebraska. The Platte and
Republican rivers have spots
that are completely dry, he said.
Low water levels concen
trate fish in small areas, which
puts stress on the fish and
reduces their oxygen levels,
Tuniksaid.
The lack of water also expos
es plants that can release toxins
into water and poison fish, he
said.
But fisherman should not
take the news to mean that
Nebraska fish are done for, he
said.
A dry and wet cycle is good
for fish, Tunik said.
When water levels fall,
plants that are good for fish can
provide a spawning habitat by
moving into dry spots and
attracting insects, which the
fish can later eat.
“Fish will survive; they are
resilient animals,” he said.
