The Urae's 'Too Much Stereo' a polished effort from local favorites

If you haven't heard of it, you
haven’t been in college at the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln
long enough.
The Urge hits small venues
around the Omaha/Lincoln
area more often than George W.
Bush makes an ass of himself.
Their shows are filled with ener
gy, their lyrics full of vulgarity,
and their music will animate
the most complacent listener.
The Urge’s power is fueled
by its instrumentation. Karl
Grable plays a smooth, driving
bass line, while John Pessoni
prods the song along with his
intricate drumming. Jerry Jost
has the ability to switch
between quiet funk guitar riffs
to loud, dirty steroid-addicted
fuzz guitar in half a beat.
Mat Kwiatkowski and Bill
Reiter supply a new element to
the typical hard rock sound
with their trombone and saxo
phone expertise. But the real
magic of The Urge is Steve
Ewing’s silky smooth voice,
even when he is singing lyrics
like “cold, cold steel killed her
babies.”
"Too Much Stereo" is The
Urge’s third album and ushers it
further into the commercial
world. The sound has a studio
quality similar to it’s sopho
more album “Master of Styles,”
which differs greatly from the
raw and primitive debut,
“Receiving the Gift of Flavor.”
“Too Much Stereo” throws in
more funky songs and less dis
torted rage than it’s first album,
but exhibits a greater control
over the direction of the songs
and the tone of their music.
Where “Receiving the Gift of
Flavor” almost ultimately ends
up breaking into a full-fledged
jam session after each song,
some songs on “Too Much
Stereo” may be labeled as bal
lads.
The alternative rock music
characterized by real-life lyrics,
not sensational violence or false
love, is kept alive by this
Midwest group.
"Too Much Stereo” is a great
place to start with The Urge. The
lyrics are easy to handle and the
melodies are catchy.
But to capture the energy of
the band, try “Receiving the Gift
of Flavor” or catch them
September 21 at the Royal
Grove, 340 W. Cornhusker
