She’s a mother, a daughter, a
priest and a lesbian. But above
all, Sinead O’Connor is a
woman, and her newest album,
“Faith and Courage,” discusses
and celebrates her balance of
these places in society.
The dichotomy of Christian
life as a lesbian is the theme of
the single “No Man’s Woman.”
Initially, the lyrics seem to focus
solely on O’Connor’s homosex
uality. But the second verse
delves into a spiritual world
where the lyric “man” doesn’t
refer to gender but encompass
es the entire human race.
The confidence that
O’Connor exudes in her music
makes her more naturally beau
tiful than any pop star of the
modem musical era. Her music
is filled with honest lyrics and
flashes of her Dublin roots. She
guilds pop,
folk, Celtic
and hints of
electronica to
create a per
sonal sound
worthy of imi
tation, but beyond duplication.
O’Connor has done it, on her
own terms. If you pass up “Faith
and Courage,” you are missing a
true musical, artistic and politi
