Colombian gunmen massacre 17
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
BOGOTA, Colombia -
Gunmen killed at least 17 people
in two separate massacres
Sunday, one of which officials
attributed to right-wing paramili
tary militias.
The killings come three days
before President Clinton is to visit
Colombia to discuss U.S. anti-nar
cotics aid to the troubled nation.
In one attack, gunmen seized,
interrogated and then executed 10
people in the Caribbean coastal
townof Cienaga, Magadalena
State police told The Associated
Press. Police were investigating
whether the attack was carried out
by paramilitary militias or rival
left-wing guerrillas. Both groups
are active in the region.
Meanwhile, suspected right
wing gunmen raided two barrios
along a nine-mile stretch of high
way outside the Pacific port of
Buenaventura, killing seven peo
ple and leaving their bodies along
the road. The killers painted near
by buildings with die initials AUG
the Spanish initials for the para
military umbrella group calling
itself the United Self-defense
Forces of Colombia.
During his one-day stop ir
Colombia on Wednesday, Ointor
will meet President Andre*
Pastrana to discuss a $13 billior
U3. anti-naicotics aid package foi
Colombia and its Andean neigh
bors recently approved ir
Washington.
The aid is being provided
despite objections by internation
al human rights organizations
The groups have urged Clinton tc
withhold U.S. assistance until
Pastrana takes decisive action to
curb the paramilitary forces,
which have ties to the country**
military.
