PHILLIPS from Page 10
“It was exciting to get back
on the field, but at the same
time, it was frustrating,” Phillips
said.
Phillips tried to play through
it, but three games into the sea
son, she decided to speak to her
teammates.
Phillips said fifth-year senior
Jenny Benson, who also had to
redshirt because of an ACL
injury, talked her into redshirt
ing the season.
“In the back of my mind, I
always thought about redshirt
ing, but that was admitting
defeat,” Phillips said.
Despite sitting out the year,
Phillips said she never felt like a
redshirt.
Phillips continued to prac
tice with the team and accom
panied her teammates on road
trips.
Just weeks before the Big 12
regular season began, her
choice to redshirt became a
wise one.
In November, Phillips re
injured her left knee, this time
tearing all of her cartilage, leav
ing none underneath her knee
cap. .
"She didn't want to redshirt
initially, but she couldn’t based
on the injury timelines,” Walker
said.
Phillips would again spend
the next few months in rehab.
She rode the stationary bike, did
aerobics and lifted weights, any
thing she could do to regain her
speed.
This time, it worked. Phillips
cut more than .10 off of her 40
yard dash time and was nomi
nated for the Husker Power
Award, given to athletes with the
best workout performances.
“She's so dedicated,” said
teammate Brooke Jones. “You
can see how far she’s come back
after the two surgeries.”
Phillips admitted the injury
still crossed her mind at times
but never while she played.
Tonight’s game at
Minnesota will be Phillips’ first
regular-season game since Sept.
24 against Thlsa.
She will play at the midfield
er and forward positions.
Now that Phillips has come
all the way back and been given
help by so many, she serves as a
mentor for Marie-Claude
Henry, a freshman midfielder
who’s also recovering from an
ACL injury.
“Now I’m the one able to
help,” Phillips said.

And it should prove to be
competitive. Cook says the teams
will be devised into a “B team”
and an “A team.”
However, it’s tough to call any
team a “B team” that features the
likes of veteran setter Jill
McWilliams and Nancy
Meendering, who is redshirting
the season.
“The A side’s going to play
great if they want to win. It's going
to be a very competitive match
because of who we have on the
other side,” he said.
