More upperclassmen stay in residence halls this year BYGWENT1ETQEN More upperclassmen are call ing residence hall rooms home this semester. TWo hundred more upper classmen live in the residence halls of the University of Nebraska- Lincoln this year than last year at this time, said Doug Zatechka, director of housing. The halls traditionally hous ing freshmen hit their capacity, as well this year, Zatechka said. He doesn’t know why more upperclassmen are returning to the halls this year, but Zatechka said the rising costs of living off campus could be driving stu dents to the residence halls. UNLs housing rates fall near the bottom when compared with other universities of its size. Nebraska has the second lowest room and board rates in the Big 12, Zatechka said. But several upperclassmen said they didn’t consider prices when they decided to live on campus. Junior accounting major Heather Banta moved into Sandoz Residence Hall from her Lincoln home this year. She had lived with her parents the past two years. “My family moved to Texas, so (my friend) Jerusha offered to share her room with me,” Banta said. Ban ta said she didn't consider moving off campus with her friend. “Since I had never lived on my own, I thought this would be an easier transition,” she said. Sophomore biochemistry major Carl Galloway is returning to Neihardt Residence Center for the second year. He decided to stay on campus because he liked Neihardt's Ethernet connection and being on campus. Galloway said he didn’t con sider the costs of living off cam pus. He also said he didn’t mind living with younger students. “I haven’t had the chance to meet most of them,” he said. “I’m kind of one of the older people on the floor, so that's nice." Students returning to the halls will find small changes in their rooms and hallways, and some might even find a new nameplate on their residence hall directors’ office door. Five new residence hall direc tors moved into UNL halls in July. Josh Overocker is the new residence director for Abel South, and Ann Marie Gottner will take over duties in Abel North. Deb Sievert will be in Pound, Josh Deacon will be in Neihardt and Meredith Carpenter will be the residence manager in Husker Hall on North 23™ Street Some other changes in the residence halls include the fin ished renovation of the rooms and quarters of the Selleck Quadrangle. The Abel game room was also changed into seven small meeting rooms to support Abel’s learning commu nities. The changes were in response to students’ demands, said Glen Schumann, assistant director of housing for facilities operations. “We are constantly renovat ing, which is why we work closely . with students with what they want,” Schumann said.
