The home’s owner Rick Saduikis, 50, was found later that morning in a second-floor bedroom. One neighbor said the fire department had been to the house several times before, but fire officials would not confirm that claim. The $239,000 home and $170,000 in contents were destroyed by the fire, Fire Investigator Don Gross said. At Saduikis’ latest business venture, Wild Birds Nature Center in Van Dorn Plaza, employees announced a clear ance sale after learning of the fire. His businesses’ future will remain uncertain until Saduikis’ estate is settled. The bird store has been open only three months, but Mends said it was only one of a number of businesses that Saduikis owned in Lincoln. Friends said Saduikis told them he brought the first General Nutrition Center stores to Lincoln. Saduikis built his house almost 20 years ago at 3721 Cooper Place in the neighbor hood that borders Holmes Lake Park. Those who knew Saduikis said he pursued businesses that matched his latest interests impetuously. Wild Bird Habitat Store employee Doug Smith said he used to sell Saduikis bird seed at his store, located at 56th Street and Highway 2, before Saduikis started his own store. Smith said Saduikis seemed to be an avid bird feeder but did not have a depth of knowledge about birds. "He spent a lot on that store, but he didn’t have the right inventory,” Smith said. Wild Birds Nature Center store manager Leslie Siegrist said Saduikis was "always into something new.” "He enjoyed having his busi nesses,” Siegrist said. "He was pretty much game for anything new.” Both Smith and Siegrist said they knew Saduikis from other jobs that they held. When Smith had a job at Westlake Hardware, he said Saduikis would always seek out the same clerks to help him when he found someone he felt comfortable with. Siegrist said Saduikis, a night owl, was always a 4 a.m. shopper at the Hinlcy Dinky where she worked.
