    Research push not
expected to slow
BY JILLZEMAN
Though UNLJs administrator
in charge of research is leaving,
the push for greater research
activity on campus that she
spearheaded will not end, a key
faculty member said.
Priscilla Grew, professor of
geosciences, said the departure
of Marsha Torr, UNLs vice chan
cellor for research, will not dras
tically affect the university’s
progress in research activity.
“I think the university has a
strong commitment to
research,” Grew said. “(Torr)
energized people, and I think
that will continue.”
Torr will be leaving the uni
versity to take a job at Virginia
Commonwealth University.
Torr, who has served as vice
chancellor since April 1999, has
accepted a position as vice pres
ident of research at the school in
Richmond, Va.
During Torr’s tenure, she
worked to increase federal
funding for research at the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
Grew said.
Grew, who served as vice
7 think the university
has a strong commit
ment to research.
(Torr) energized
people and I think
that will continue.”
Priscilla Grew
professor of geosciences
chancellor for research from
1993-99, said Torr helped the
university establish a presence
in Washington, D.C., to obtain
federal dollars.
Torr also has encouraged
faculty members to take on big
ger and more advanced
research projects, Grew said.
Torr’s work to bring new
research projects to the univer
sity can benefit students, as well
as researchers, Grew said.
“It helps students who are
looking for a job to have worked
with nationally known faculty,”
she said.
