Melanie Faft/Dk Deadbeat landlords may be added to guides FROM STAFF REPORTS Students seeking off-campus housing can face several chal lenges, including finding a good landlord and deciphering the But one task usually out weighs the others: trying to not get ripped off Tb give students more help in making their housing choices, the student senate is revamping the off-campus housing guide pro vided by Commuter Services. Right now, the guide offers a listing of available off-campus housing, which is updated weekly. But the new guide will be more comprehensive, with infor mation about starting and aiding a lease, tenant rights and utilities service, said Joel Schafer, presi dent of the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska. Schafer said he hopes the new edition will be ready in February. Another possible addition to the guide is a landlord approval system, Schafer said. Landlords will be asked to comply with a set of requirements determined by ASUN and Student Legal Services, and if they do, they will be deemed as providing; approved housing. Such requirements ma/' indude having a landlord’s lease reviewed and approved by Student Legal Services and sign ing on to a “Ttenantis Bill of Rights,” Schafer said The document may contain basic rights to protect students, such as the right to heating or the right to have a service call answered within a certain amount of time, he said Schafer said ASUN also will track the number ofhousing com plaints Student Legal Services receives in the next year to decide whether a landlord’s approval should be reviewed Sarah Siefkes, property man ager at Claremont Park Apartments, said she would be willing to comply with ASUN’s requirements to gain an approval. Landlords’ leases must cur rently fulfill requirements set by the landlord Tenant Act, so most leases should pass a review by Student Legal Services, she said K _ ^ From g $119.90 C§ to SJ $169.90 PQ Free Alteration and Top Customer Service Rnthchildk Merits Fine Fashions For Less 48th & O Street Lincoln, Nebr. 68503 402/464-6400 HUSKER HIRE LINK Thinking about an | internship or a full-time job?
