MOVIES from page 9
Probably not. Considering
you knew you’d have at least a
two-day head start on anybody,
well, wouldn’t it be pretty easy to
... disappear, in the figurative
sense? Start anew? Plan world
domination or something? If I’m
not mistaken, I believe megalo
maniacs hold that final idea in
high regard.
But “Hollow Man” refuses to
explore any of those possibili
ties, assuming that a genius like
Sebastian actually prefers to
skulk around his old girlfriend,
played by Shue. And what is
Shue, a fair dramatic actress,
doing in this movie anyway? And
who thought her hair looked flat
tering chopped up like a mop
head?
The closing sequences of the
movie have to be seen to be
believed. I grant that invisibility
gives one the power of not being
seen. I cannot grant him the
power of being torched, electro

cuted, shot, blown up and not
only living but able to suddenly
become one of the “X-Men” and
leap 20 feet in the air. And
though I’m no chemist, I doubt
centrifuges really have timers on
them, so they can count down to
a sulfuric acid bomb.
And for anybody who des
perately misses having
“MacGuyver” to watch on
Monday nights, there’s a scene
involving magnets that’ll make
any diehard blush with recogni
tion. Of course, a little theme
music would have been nice.
Then again, by its conclusion, to
compare “Hollow Man” to bad
television might be too high a
complement.
“Space Cowboys”
Director: Clint Eastwood
Stars: Clint Eastwood,
Tommy Lee Jones, Donald
Sutherland, James Garner
Rating: PG-13
The plot for this film from
actor/director Clint Eastwood is
somewhat ridiculous.
Take for example the scene in
which Hawk (Jones) straps him
self to a Russian “communica
tion” satellite (that is actually
housing nuclear missiles -
OOPS!) and jet propels it to the
moon so as not to destroy the
earth.
If it sounds ludicrous, it is.
Not that this couldn’t happen in
some “fake” world, but it would
seem fairly unlikely in a world
where the government of the
United States watches NASA
like the back of its hand.
The first half of the movie
could have been cut down from
an hour to 30 minutes but for
some reason Eastwood felt the
movie needed so many ultima
tums traveling between the head
of NASA and Frank (Eastwood).
Eastwood whines all the time
saying things like, “I won’t help
you with that satellite unless you
let me and my crew go up!”
Then, the other guy fires
back with, “Yeah, well, your
crew has to pass the physical
because you’re really old.”
Then Eastwood says, “Yeah,
well, you have to quit making all
of these old jokes because the
audience doesn’t think they’re
funny.”
Something like that.
I’m sure that some of the
jokes would be funnier if they
were delivered better. However,
the four men seem to be forcing
the joke and so, more often than
not, they just fizzle with no
laughter from the audience.
Maybe it’s because 65 year olds
shouldn’t be making jokes about
women’s orgasms.
The point of all this is that if
you watch the previews, you’ve
seen the movie. It is fairly bland
with an overdone plot that we’ve
seen in “Apollo 13” and
“Armageddon” and “The Right
Stuff” and....
Like the plot, the camera
work is fairly uneventful.
Eastwood opts for the motion
less, simple technique of the
camera with few close-ups. The
best work is done in space with
shots of the earth and the moon.
Now, if only they were real shots
then that would be a movie!
Some of the shining points of
“Space Cowboys” was the lack
of music. It was quite subtle and
almost non existent and it gave
space for the experienced actors
to speak and that’s nice for these
four gentlemen who aren’t so
loud as they used to be now that
they have dentures.
Anyway, if you like space
movies and one of the four actors
then this is movie. If not, go see

Stenberg, Nelson predict partisan race
RACE from page 2
The candidates agreed that
the United States should contin
ue to seek overseas markets
while promoting ethanol and
other agricultural products.
Both candidates support nor
mal trade relations with China.
Stenberg said he supported lift
ing the food embargo on Cuba.
Nelson said he generally
opposed the use of food in eco
nomic sanctions, but he did not
commit to a stance on the Cuba
embargo.
Nelson said he supported
abolishing the inheritance tax
and the “marriage penalty,” the
higher taxes that some married
couples must pay. He also sup
ports tax credits to make educa
tion and job training more
affordable for families, he said.
He also wants to create a
patient's bill of rights and pro
vide prescription drug benefits
under Medicare.
Stenberg said he supported
increased defense spending to
raise military pay and purchase
the most up-to-date weaponry.
He also favors a capital gains
tax cut and school vouchers to
allow some parents to send their
children to private schools.
On e-commerce taxation,
Nelson said Internet transac
tions should be taxed just as if
the purchases had happened in
stores. Stenberg said the govern
ment eventually might have to
tax Internet sales, but regulation
should wait to see how the e
commerce market develops.
