Young actors learn, create
during Rep’s summer camp
By Kate Grafel
Staff Writer
Lasting friendships are
forged, pranks are played, and
the world of theater is celebrated
as 29 high school kidi experi
ence a week they will never for
get.
The Nebraska Repertory
Theatre’s annual summer camp
began Sunday with auditions in
the Studio Theatre and will con
clude Saturday with an original
production by the students.
High school students from all
over Nebraska arrived at the
Temple Building Sunday after
noon and launched a week full of
auditions.
UNL doctoral student
Michael Rothmayer used the
audiitions to determine the
nature of each student’s partici
pation in the final show, which
the students are writing.
U They will be creating, rehearsing
and performing a full-length show
in one week ”
“They will be creating,
rehearsing and performing a
full-length show in one week,”
Rothmayer said.
The performance will be a
tribute to the arts, featuring
monologues and dialogues,
music, writing and drawing.
The students attend acting
and improvisation classes each
morning, followed by a two-hour
workshop in the afternoon.
Diane Robinson, an actor
and director from Chicago,
teaches the acting class. She is
currently acting in the Rep’s
“Picnic,” which opened July 13.

The improvisation class is
taught by UNL graduate student
Amy Rafa. Students in this class
play energy-building, warm-up
games such as “Kitty in the
Comer” and “Zip Zap Zop.”
They also play a common
improvisation game known as
freeze tag. Two actors improvise
a scene until an audience mem
ber says “freeze.” The two actors
hold their positions until the per
son who stopped the scene takes
the place of one of them and
begins a new scene.

“Grease” slides into Community Playhouse
Raymond Rinkol _
Staff Writer *
“Grease”...it speaks for
itself-a film that encapsulated an
era dominated by punk guys with
greased back hair and leather
jackets, ladies with tight pants
and too much lip-stick.
Well, you can get another
chance to see that timeless story
unfold on the stage of the
Lincoln Community Playhouse
each Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday at 7:30pm.
The show focuses on the two
1959 gangs: The Burger Palace
Boys, which is run by bad boy
Danny Zuko and the Pink
Ladies, which is helmed by Betty
Rizzo.
“I think people will be sur
prised," said Matt Landis, who is
playing the part of Zuko, “since
this is more of an ensemble pro
duction than the movie."
Landis, making his debut at
performing “Grease", said that
he welcomes the challenges of
being the star character.
Despite the story line stray
ing from its intense attention on
the relationship between Zuko
and the goody-two-shoes girl
who eventually steals the heart of
Zuko, Sandy Dumbrowski, it
will adhere to the petty and per
verted activity that defined high
school for far too many of the
hopeless teens in “Grease” the
movie.
“We are going to take a nos
talgic, raunchy approach to it,”
Robin McKercher said, the artis
tic director of the show.
Stealing hubcaps, hot rod
ding around and sexual mayhem
are going to serve as an integral
feature of the play, McKercher
said.
