such as the camels, require a lot
of patience.
Beyond keeping the animals
phsyically healthy, zoo keepers
take special care to enrich theirs
lives.
“We give them things that
keep them healthy mentally,” she
said. “It gives them something to
do. I give the baboons boxes and
paper to play with and the leop
ards love cooking spices.”
- The zoo keepers are also
more than caretakers.
“The animals most definitely
know me,” she said. “The New
Guinea Singing Dogs will rego
nize me even if I walk by out of
uniform.
“The job doesn’t end when
we leave, either. If there is a
thunderstorm in the middle of
the night, someone comes out
and checks on the animals.”
When animals die, it can be
an intensely emotional situation.
“We had a baby camel die
about a year ago; it was rough for
everyone involved,” she said.
“There was nothing we could do
to save it.”
Looking to her future,
Rudnick can’t imagine life with
out the zoo.
“I will always be associated
with the zoo world,” she said.
