Hagenbach Quintet poised to spice up finale
By Melanie Mensch
staff writer
The Jazz in June concert
series takes a zesty detour from
traditional jazz in its finale with
the eclectic sounds of the Angela
Hagenbach Quintet
Fresh off an eight-week
world tour, Angela Hagenbach
returns to die Midwest to tanta
lize the eardrums of Lincoln with
a colorful mix of Brazilian, Afro
Cuban, and ladn influenced jazz.

However, Hagenbach’s genre
of music wasn’t always so jazzy.
“I started singing in a gospel
choir because I wanted to sing
Christmas carols,” she said. “I
did that for a couple of years, but
I had a dilemma: I didn’t want to
keep singing church music. I
wanted something I could really
sink my teeth into, but not like
dod or Tod 40.”
Through research,
Hagenbach discovered musi
cians like Sarah Vaughan, Ella
Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington,
and she knew she found her
music match.
Adding to tne melodic con
coction are Danny Embrey, gui
tar; Steve Rigazzi, bass; Gary
Helm, percussion and Doug
Auwarter, drums. During their
five years performing together,
the Kansas City quintet has
played a variety of venues from
concert halls and theaters to open
air festivals, clubs and educa
tional institutions.
Though the sundry of sounds
may pleasantly surprise audi
ences, the diversity of other cul
tures astounded Rigazzi on the
world tour he and Hagenbach
performed for two months ago.

and Rigazzi traveled to countries
unfamiliar with jazz, stopping in
Uganda, Ethiopia, Jordan,
Oman, Israel, West Bank, India
and Thailand.
“Each culture we saw was
amazingly unique,” Rigazzi said.
“So many people came up to us
after we played for them and told
us they weren’t sure if they were
going to like jazz, but now they
were jazz converts. It did my
heart good to know the people
were listening and responding to
the music.”
Hagenbach said she was
pleased to have changed the
assumptions other countries
might have had about American
musk.
“They were hungry for jazz,”
she said. “These countries don’t
have a lot of access to other cul
tones. We showed them there was
more to American music than
just MTV”
The quintet is also opening
doors for Lincolnites to other
jazz genres with their zesty orig
inal compositions, including
songs from their new CD to be
released this fall, and spicier ver
sions of traditional favorites.
“It’ll be different,” Rigazzi
said of their music. “What sells
Angela is she’s very diverse in
her program.”
All five of the quintet s CDs
will be for sale during the Jazz in
June concert tonight They may
also be purchased at the group’s
website, amazonrecords.com.
“Believe it or not we have a
very good following in Lincoln,”
said Hagenbach. “Jazz in June is
a fun concert and I’m happy to be
die season finale.”
