Variety, all-ages venues mark local music scene By Jason Hardy Staff writer A staple of any college town is a thriving local music scene. Not only do local bands con tinually provide outlets for live entertainment, they’re often in contact with other lesser- known bands from around the country that come through on tours and bring variety to the local scene. Luckily for University of Nebraska-Lincoln students, Lincoln has a very eclectic local music scene, with groups in styles as diverse as tradi tional blues, folk, pop, rock ’n’ roll, punk, ska, hard core and experi mental. Generally the only prob lems that arise are ones per taining to where these bands play. Nebraska law pro hibits any minor from being in a bar alter y p.m., so when bands play shows in local bars, they are usually for audi ences 21 and over. While downtown bars like Duffy’s Tavern, 1412 0 St., the Zoo Bar, 136 N. 14th St., and Knickerbockers, 9th and O streets, continually offer quality music with impressive stage sound, they don’t offer it to everyone continually. The only exception is Knickerbockers, which usually puts on shows during two different time slots. The first slot, from 6 to 9 p.m., is for all ages, and the sec ond is from 9 p.m. until whenev l——— er the show is over (or when the bar closes at 1 a.m.). These shows are for people age 19 and over. Knickerbockers’ policy gives those students under 19 an outlet to see bands that are sort of big, but not big enough for the Bob Devaney Center or Pershing Auditorium. Also, by making its 9 p.m. shows for ages 19 and over, Knickerbockers allows some of the younger students the possibility of hanging out with older friends and meeting people they wouldn’t have an opportunity to meet otherwise. Knickerbockers is able to do this because the bar side basical ly is separated from the show side, and it is easy to monitor underage concert-goers. While Knickerbockers is the only bar to offer all-ages shows consistently, it is not the only game in town. Many of the local bands and campus chapters of organizations, like Amnesty International, organize shows at various all-ages venues and pro mote quality musical entertain ment as well as social aware ness. The main venues for these shows are the Culture Center, located a block south of the Nebraska Union, the Havelock Social Hall, 6136 Platte Ave., Van Dorn Park shelter, 10th and Van Dorn streets, or Antelope Park shelter, located in Antelope Park, near 28th and A streets. Because these venues aren’t full-time music venues, they don’t have listings of shows being held there, so it is up to whoever rented the venue for a show to put up fliers around town. The best way to keep informed of upcoming shows is to check the union’s announcement areas for fliers and to stop in at local record stores like Homer’s, 1339 O St., Zero Street Records, 120 N. 14th St., and Recycled Sounds, 12110 St., all of which put up fliers about upcoming shows. There is also a locally coor dinated e-mail ring at starcity hardcore@yahoo.com that sends updates on underground music in Lincoln. People who wish to join simply need to send an e-mail to the aforementioned address and wait for the replies. Other than that, there are usually some large all-ages shows throughout the course of the year, but those are fairly inconsistent, so the best way to find exciting local music is to look for the fliers.
