Baseball exec to speak at ceremony
About 1,100graduates expected at Devaney

In early March, die University of
Nebraska-Lincoln prints a diploma
for every senior who applies for a
degree, whether they pass their finals
or not. »•'
About 2,000 students are expect
ed to get their diplomas in May; the
rest will be destroyed. i
Earl Hawkey, director of registra
tions and records, said about 1,100 of
the diplomas will be awarded at the
commencement ceremony Saturday
at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Graduates participating in the
ceremony are asked to be at the
indoor track area by 8:30 a.m. They
are required to wear caps and gowns.
The Devaney Center will open
between 8 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. to the
general public. Hawkey expects most
people will arrive between 8:30 a.m.
and 9 a.m.
Admission tickets are not
required.
The processional will begin at 9
a.m., and the ceremony will begin at
9:30 a.m.
“It’s a very traditional ceremony,”
Hawkey said.
Following the opening and
national anthem, Joel Schafer,
ASUN president, will address the
commencement crowd during the
greeting.
Chancellor James Moeser and
University of Nebraska President
Dennis Smith will speak during the
welcome and introductions.
Gene Budig will deliver the com
mencement address.
“It’s always good to come home,”
Budig said.
Budig is currently the senior
adviser to the commissioner of major *
league baseball.
“I am pleased to have the current
arrangement, which keeps me
involved in the game I love,” he said.
Budig is also the former chancel
lor of the IJniversity of Kansas and
former campus chief executive offi
cer at the University of West Virginia
and Illinois State University.
He received three degrees from
UNL and was once a professor at
UNL.
Budig will be teaching a class at
Princeton University next year on the
business and ethics of professional
sports, in addition to publishing a
book dealing with the economic
complexities of professional sports.
Budig was chosen by the chan
•eellor’s office to speak.
"He has* deep roots in the
Nebraska community,” said Herb
Howe, associate to the chancellor.
The ceremony should last until
noon, depending on the length of the
commencement address.

west side of track area.
